Does this chandi work in MBR?

I bought this light fixture on eBay, so I hadnÂt seen it in person. It has a fluted smoked glass column with white reeded shades. I really like the clean lines juxtaposed against the more traditional furniture in our MBR, since the house overall is transitional (our last house was an historic bungalow, so I have previously acquired antiques that IÂm working into this more modern home). I hung it this weekend, and I really like it, but IÂm not sure about the size. ItÂs a bit longer and narrower than I imagined from the dimensions. The MBR is about 16Â x 13Â (not huge but much bigger than weÂre used to ;-) I can walk under it, but my 6Â husband walks around it; it hangs right at the end of the bed, so heÂs says itÂs not a big deal to go a bit wide around it.

I havenÂt finished the window treatment over the drapes (simple flat valances with box pleated corners & centers, hung from mounting board). IÂm going to mount them just a few inches down from the ceiling to give the room more height, so that might help the chandi. Also, the lamp shade on the dresser will be covered in the same valance fabric to blend with the room better and not "pop" quite so much against the wall.

Your room is gorgeous -- I love the wall color and your lovely furnishings -- but I'm not feelin' the chandi so much. That your DH has to walk around it instead of being able to pass beneath it is something that I'd find problematic. I think it's too low. I'm also just not too keen on the style for your lovely room -- it doesn't quite mesh. I know that chandis are quite popular for bedroom and bath spaces now, but this one really looks more like it belongs over a dining table than in your sleeping space.

I hate to be a naysayer, but trust you're asking for honesty here. ;-)

I agree with auntjen, it's not what I picture for your room. I adore everything else in the room though. Can you tell me what the wall color is and is the bed an antique? I'm trying to decide what style of bed I want and I really like yours.

First off, the room is just lovely. I love that wall color and bedding! I like the light too, but I have to agree with jen that fixture seems better suited for a breakfast table than a bedroom. I envision something softer, more of a candelebra style with silk shades.

Thanks for the compliments and the honesty auntjen. The light fixture was a really good deal, so I won't be out much if I decide to change it. For some reason, I like the look but wasn't sure about the proportions. As far as walking around it, our previous bungalow had very low ceilings upstairs and tiny bedrooms; my husband walked around the light fixture in the middle of the room for 4 years and never minded a bit (so he tells me, anyway ;-).

He's really easy to please, so I can do just about any fixture I want. For those of you who don't like the current one, what would you recommend? I've considered an attractive ceiling fan, which we've installed in the other bedrooms since we're in Alabama and the nights get pretty warm. But it seems the prettier they are, the less light they provide. I just never got excited about any of the flush or semi-flush options either.

I agree with the others. You have a very nice and pretty room. The light fixture looks more kitchen or breakfast room than bedroom. It lacks the intimacy and romantic look of a bedroom light. It does not have the richness you need. I think the color is fine but it needs to be more curvy, more bulky and some crystal rather than opaque white. It looks too hard, too utilitarian and not soft and romantic. JMHO.

I picture something more romantic like a small crystal chandelier.

Thanks for the praise on the overall room. The wall color is BM Mount Saint Anne, which I love after testing many shades looking for the perfect soft gray blue green. The bed is an antique, although IÂve seen many similar styles in flea markets, CL, etc.

I appreciate the constructive feedback. I see what you mean about the hard look. The insight from GW members is great; I don't think I could have put my finger on it, but that's partly what bothered me about the shades. I donÂt want something too soft and feminine, though. IÂm not a girly girl, and I wanted to bring in some more modern elements to balance the antiques. The valance fabric is a bit retro and the master bath will have brushed nickel fixtures with glass shades, so I was hoping that would tie it together. HereÂs a shot of the future valance and lamp shade fabric:

HereÂs a close up of the fixture. If I changed the shades out for fabric shades or maybe just different glass in more of a bell shape (clear seeded maybe?), would that soften it up enough?

I think a chandi with uplights will look less dining room-ish. This one is probably too bit, but this more along the style lines that I was thinking.

If you use night stands with lamps, then I wouldn't worry about the overhead fixture giving off the right light. I think a ceiling fan with a pretty fixture would be great. Now that warm weather is coming, you want to be prepared! :) Some don't like ceiling fans, but I find them attractive and practical. Especially in southern heat.

If not a ceiling fan or chandy, have you seen the new flush and semi-flush fixtures online lately? They are just gorgeous, nothing like they used to be.

Though you may not be interested in "romantic," your fixture nonetheless looks very utilitarian, more kitchen than bedroom. Even if you are not a girly girl but is your husband a manly man? If so, go to more sex than sushi.

I'm a crystal kinda gal, myself. Having said that, I really don't find anything horrible about your light fixture and actually think it's cute.

With the fabric you've selected and what you're saying about the bathroom, I can see it working if your DH doesn't mind (I'm also form before function, which can get me in a pickle sometime).

As far as sex goes...I'll ask DH to take a look when he gets home from work but I think I already know the answer. :)

Sex??? WTH am I missing here? LOL!

Thanks for the assurance Parma. As I mentioned before, I was more concerned about proportions than it looking completely out of place. I can see where some of the utilitarian/kitchen comments are coming from, especially given the glass shades. But my husband is an engineer; if the light works and doesn't cost too much, then he's happy. Of course environment does affect attitude and emotion, but I can almost guarantee sushi doesn't cross his mind in the bedroom ;-)

    it is lovely

I have to admit, I like the chandelier - I just don't like the shades. Very utilitarian. Perhaps shades like the ones I've linked below might fit the style a bit better and make it more bedroom-appropriate?

Also, you might want to check and see if that chain link can be internalized into either the ceiling piece or the column on the chandelier - we had to do that with one of ours and it wasn't a big deal, and it saves a couple of inches. I really like the glass column!
