Decorating Help Pics

I have just finished a kitchen remodel in my 25 yo country home. Decorating is not my strong point and I would like a few opinions.

#1. What are your thoughts on this window? We do not need shades for privacy or sun. We do not like windows covered, but do you think some type of valence would add a little pizazz?

#2. This is the entry from kitchen into sunroom, any suggestions for what to put above that entryway?

Thanks. I love my new kitchen, but feel I need to add some color. (Sorry for the large size of the photos, everytime I try to edit them, my computer locks up)

Love your kitchen and specially your granite. I think it's fine the way it is. I had a similar doubt about my window. We had framed it and it's a huge window (above sink) and eventhough I've always had some type of valance I really didn't want to block any view or light. So I opted to leave as is as I believe you should. Now above the doorway, you can put any type of decor you like. Plates, iron scroll, a nice clock, a sign, a platter...anything.
I bought a clock (that is part of a sign) and says HOME and that's what I'm putting above my winow. I have more wall space than you. I have some french doors and I'm still looking for something to put there.

I have no suggestions...sorry! I just wanted you to know that I absolutely love what you have done so far. Your kitchen is gorgeous and your sunroom is soothing. I will be watching this thread to see what others suggest. Everyone always shares such terrific advice and that is not my strength...that's why I lurk here, lol! Beautiful job so far. Good luck to you.

I would leave the window without any window treatments BUT how about adding flower boxes along the top rail of your outdoor deck -- and those flowers/vines/herbs will show nicely through the window! Or add an umbrella to your outside seating area -- always pretty!

And I leave the area above the doorway opening plain too .... there is enough pattern in your wonderful granite and backsplash ......

I think it needs a valance to add color! Your kitchen is beautiful! I love what fabrics can do to a room, when done simply and tastefully .What colors do you have going in your room so far? I would do a complimentary fabric valance- just a short valance ,so as to not obstruct the view! You will probably need to do another similar valance in your sun room.

Thank you for responding. I am glad that 2 people advised to leave the window as is. That is my preference, but I do feel I need a little color as gracie suggested. I would like to add some colorful jars or canisters on the counter to the right of the sink, just have not found the right thing yet. That might do it. Any ideas on that??

Teacats, I love your window box idea. My deck is full of flowers in the summer and so I will get dh to build me a window box. That window replaced a bay window, so it does create a spot on the deck that was not there before. I am in MN and spring is just not coming yet, so we can't have any flowers on the deck yet.

If anyone has anymore ideas, I'd love to hear them. I guess I just feel like my kitchen doesn't quite have the "wow" factor I am looking for.
    Thanks!

Congrats on your pretty new kitchen!

I would do a valance for the color, and to soften things up a bit. Have you looked at the valances at Pate Meadows? Yummy!

Above the doorway, how about stencilling some words you like? "Celebrate your curves!" :)

I would leave it as it is. I love fabric, but honestly think it would look out of place there. Your kitchen is beautiful.

Since it is a large window and you want color....pick a color and then look for glass bottles or vases out of that color to catch the light. A friend of mine did that in a paladium window with blue glass bottles/vases and it looks lovely.

Love your kitchen! I would leave the window bare and bring in color w/ something else. Your window sill is too narrow for something there, but your idea of placing items on the counter is good if they won't be in your way.

Color can be added w/ dish and hand towels and can be changed on a whim. Your basic colors lend themselves to any color in the rainbow.

The area over the doorway doesn't NEED to have anything. But if it is bugging you, a series of 3 plates or 2 plates flanking a platter in the center would be simple and nice. Plain white w/ an embossed rim would be simple and would go w/ any other colors in the area. Or perhaps you love your everyday dishes and could use some of those.

Gorgeous kitchen! With such a beautifully framed window, I say don't cover it with anything.

How about this glass canister set for your counter. I've seen them in many places in different colors. I always wanted a set.

Here is a link that might be useful: glass canister set

I don't think you have to have anything, but I understand what you are feeling. Personally, I would try to pull in the color of the upholstery in the adjacent room (can't be sure if it is terra cotta, or a red that is reading paler in the pix). I would do a simple valance with box pleats in a contrasting fabric, no gathers, something like this. I would make it so it comes down a bit below where the light fixture hangs, so it frames the fixture, but nothing too long. Maybe a striped fabric instead of the floral, with a small check in the pleats. Buttons in the ORB finish.

    box pleated straight valance

I would then try to pull that color in by using it in the pots for the plants, the utensil holder on the cooktop, etc. Maybe some pieces with that color in the glass front cabinets, too.

As for the space above the doorway, I would leave it plain. You have enough going on visually in the room beyond that you really don't need anything there. Also, because you have something hanging over the windows in the next room, I think that would feel kind of redundant.

    Lovely new kitchen!

WoW! Great ideas and feedback. I love the canisters, that is what I am looking for, something different and classy. After reading the comments I think I will leave the window and the space above the doorway as is and work on accents. And then if that doesn't work, I can try the valence. Sometimes "less" is "more".
Oh, the chairs in the sunroom are more terra cotta, not red. They are pretty intense in color (long story). I think I will try to pull some of that color into the kitchen as well as some greens.

Thanks. This site is just the BEST!
