Composite Deck Choices

Hello...I'm building 2 porches for my grandmother and need your opinions on which composite decking material I should choose. I have quotes from 4 places, each carries a different brand.

Veranda, Cedar, 15 year warranty

ChoiceDek Premium, Woodtone, Lifetime warranty

Trex Accents, Saddle, 25 year warranty

Timbertech, Cedar, 25 year warranty

The Veranda and ChoiceDek came in at about $2000, and the Trex (with hidden fasteners) is $400 more. I'm still waiting for the Timbertech quote.

Can anyone comment on what may be the best choice? Thanks.

Of those choices I'd choose the Timbertech. Others I would consider would be Premier, Evergrain, & AmeriDeck. All are available at Austin Wholesale Decking. Call 512-834-1200 & ask Fernando for a quote on those.

    I would go TimberTech. John

John / Deckman...Have you had bad experiences with Veranda or ChoiceDek? Just wondering b/c the Timbertech quote has not come in yet and I must make a decision to get the material delivered in time.

Anybody out there use Veranda or ChoiceDek? Please share good or bad experiences.

Might help to note that this will be used on a porch so it will not get much direct sun. And my grandmother is a clean-aholic so she will very likely wash it very often.

    Thanks!

I wouldn't use the choicedek or Veranda. From what I remember it (choicedek) has one of the highest %'s of woodflour & the woodflour is exposed on the surface. This is how most composites fail, the exposed wood absorbs moisture causing it to decay/mold/mildew. Veranda is a Lowes exclusive product that is generic Fiberon which if I remember right has one of the shortest warranties ( 10 years), maybe Lowes does better w/the warranty period for Veranda. I just know there are better choices for a composite than those.

5 year old choice deck, condos decks and walk ways,10/20' off the ground, bigest span 16''. People are steping thru it.

The material is crumbling,it looks like uv has broken down the plastic leaving the junk wood exposed to the weather and weight of the condo trafic.

Its gunna be someone's problem but not mine.

I dont know anything about Veranda/fiberon but then I dont buy important building materials from the box stores. J

All our composite decks are 2x6 Evergrain. I've looked at other products and don't like any of them. A sales rep offered me a huge discount on Fiberon if I'd allow my home deck to be used as a "stop by and see it in application" site, and I turned him down- that garbage won't come on my property.

OK...you've convinced me that I should go with Timbertech. The quote came in at about $2400 for 320 sq ft (includes trim board).

My next question, can I use hidden fasteners with TT? This is Timbertech TwinFinish Cedar. Or should I stick with SS screws?

    Thanks for the help.

We are currently building a TimberTech deck & used the hidden ConceaLoc fasteners. We're quite happy with the look and ease of installation - first time deck builders. You can see some pictures using the link below.

    Hope this helps.

You are paying $2400 for 320 sq ft plus trim? I can get you NewTech composite for $1600 assuming you have 96 ln of trim. NewTech's wood is just as good as Timbertech's and also has a 20 year warranty on it. If you want to see the material first thats fine too. I can get you more information. Our warehouse is located in Houston. My email me at Richard@newgroupasia.com I will get back to you as soon as possible.

We're in the process of finishing a CorrectDeck CX in gray. It's about 800 sq.ft. We're quite happy with it, though were a bit dubious because of the shine on the CX. That all but disappears in a short while. Does it look like painted wood? Yes. But I've yet to see any of the composites that really look like stained wood. We had to be careful since we live near the coast in Calif. SF bay area and mildew and mold is a big threat. The deck gets littered with oak and eucaliptus leaves, bird droppings and racoon footprints. It washes off easily. Though it does not scratch easily, you do have to be careful not to gouge it.
