Does anyone have a soapstone sink?

DH and I were kitchen shopping today. He saw a soapstone counter and fell in love with the matching sink. Does anyone have a soapstone sink? What do you love or hate about it? DH has stayed out of most of the planning of this kitchen project. I think it's funny that he has gotten so interested in sinks, especially since he rarely uses it.....!

We have a soapstone sink. It is the kind that was carved out of a single block... the corners inside are rounded. We love it! It is so easy to keep clean. However, it does scratch on the inside and there are some dings as well. This sink is a made of the softer soapstone. The fabricator we used also fabricated sinks for individuals. Just another option out there where you could choose your kind of soapstone for your sink. We were just lucky that ours matched our countertops since it did not come from the same family of slabs.

I have one too. When we decided on a soapstone sink, we originally were going to get a slab sink (made of 5 different pieces put together) and then DH saw the block sink and it was all over!

We really love the size (33") and yes, it will scratch, ding etc like the counters will. I have also broken 3 (thankfully inexpensive) wine glasses in it but that has only happened when the kids pile dishes in on top of said glass, and it falls over and smashes...

All told we love our sink and wouldn't trade it:

I have 2 of them. Mine are both salvage so the chips and dings were there for more or less 50-100 yrs . Mine are pieced together from slabs. The large garden sink is an original Alberene soapstone with tag on the front. I haven't ever broken anything in them after 5 yrs. Check into salvage. A great history as well as built-in chips :) Nor'east Salvage has lots of them. c

Oh my goodness -- I LOVE this forum! Thank you so much for all the great info and pictures. DH is blown away by the fact that I could get so much information so quickly...

Trailrunner--does gunk get built up in the corners? I saw all the sinks at NE Salvage and was figuring out what the mileage would be from here!

I adore mine. It's my favorite thing in the kitchen. I have a 30" single bowl, slab-style and stuff can get into the corners, but I just make a point of sponging and rinsing them when I clean up. No big deal.

If I had room, I'd get a 36".

I do the same as edie. Just whoosh the water around for a second and that is all. I had all of my salvage from Nor'east held as I picked out things . It took me 6 months to complete my order with them.They sent me very accurate pics and I chose from the photos. When I was ready they packed it all and a Roadway truck delivered it here. The driver was exceptional and even helped unload. It was a great experience and the folks at Nor'east are wonderful. If you order from them please mention that Caroline in AL sent you ! c

I think we've actually made a decision about SOMETHING! The windows and door will be installed sometime this week (hopefully)and then we'll be able to nail down the final layout and actually get started. Reading horror stories from others is a bit daunting, but I know all the people working on the project personally, so hopefully that will help. Hard to escape an irate customer in our little community!

Trailrunner -- I'll be sure to send your regards if we go with anything from NE Salvage. They're not too far (5 hrs one way) for a road trip. Springtime here in Maine is less than inspiring, so a trip "out" would be good for my mental health!

remodelfla -- the counters I saw yesterday reminded me of your gorgeous ones (only not quite as nice...) I ran my hand over them and thought of you!

Thanks to everyone for the links (loved Sabajimata's and carecook's kitchens). Funny how I've looked at them before but because I wasn't considering a soapstone sink, I didn't notice the them.

DS and I went for a walk down on the shore this morning. We had fun imagining what life will be like in our new place this time next year....can hardly wait!

I also have a soapstone sink made from slabs. I worried about germs in the seams - beside doing like above when I boil tea water I always do extra and pour the remaining around the edges of the sink. Probably does nothing except make me feel better.

swimmer - I know this is an older thread, but I was googling soapstone sink and found it. It makes me laugh, because I just had the same experience with my DH. I finally sat him down and MADE him look at pictures of kitchens to see what he liked. He saw a soapstone sink and totally fell in love with it (I had already picked a Franke Orca, but I can be flexible! LOL)

It's funny what guys are drawn to!
