I hadn't considered the drop for mine either. I've gotten used to it and it seems normal now. A height extension would be too risky when the afternoon breeze comes through where I'm at.

I think the standard height of most umbrellas is 9'. The only company I know of that makes a telescoping pole is Shademakers.
I just got their catalog and '07 price list. I don't think I have a chance convincing the hubby we need one.

The aluminum umbrella I bought from Costco comes with a two piece pole. One idea I had was to get a longer replacement for the lower pole section with the same inside diameter. Only reason I haven't acted on it is because I'm afraid the additional leverage would cause the umbrella insert and plaster to crack.

I just went out and measured, my baja shelf is 23" below the coping. The difference is probably that the umbrella sleeve is at the end of the shelf farthest from the step in, so it isn't right over the step.

Skinnydipper, that is probably the problem. Our baja deck is only 5 feet from the edge of the pool. I put the umbrella sleeve 3.5' out from the edge because i had heard of people having problems with cracking etc, so....I opted to have it futher in to guarantee stability. Now if I could only find an umbrella with an 11' pole.

What about just getting a Pool Buoy? The umbrella will float anywhere with you. Underwater is a two foot arm and counterweight that keeps it upright.

There is a business opportunity for someone to make an 11’ umbrella and or/an extension pole for those of us with Cabo shelves with 9’ umbrellas.

We have the same issue. The edges of the umbrella are right at eye level to whomever is entering into the pool at the steps. Pool companies could be recommending a taller umbrella to customers they sell these shelves to.

i got put pvc in it last year, of course my husband threw it away and i have to remember how I did it. So go to home depot and get one that will fit in the sleeve and a peice to attach to it that will make it easier for the pole to fit in. It raised it. I live in a windy area, so I just take it down when the pool is not being used. It just looks nice durin parties.
