Are the exposed beams real?

Are these exposed beams real? or are they cosmetic? if cosmetic, how did you accomplish this? I would like to creat a similar effect in my living room.

    The beams are real, and faux painted to appear as though they are rustic wood. There are ways to create faux beams though, here is a great article that describes it in detail: http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-install-faux-ceiling-beams/index.html

    We also have a vaulted ceiling and would like to run a beam down the center. Currently, our light fixture hangs off center. We want it to hang from the wood beam, like you do in the photo. How did you hang the light from the beam?

    Yes, they are real. We stained them on site mixing a few different colors so I do not have a name or formula.
