flooring first or cabinets?

All along I thought it was "natural" for flooring to be installed first...then cabinets. Obviously alot less cutting for flooring install.

We measured for our custom cabs today. It's sounding like they will be ready for install right about when painting is done, so flooring won't be in yet.

Besides the extra cutting/measuring for flooring installers, is there any other difference? What about appliance heights? Will there have to be some sort of trim piece around the bottom of all the cabinets to hide any imperfections? I'm not so sure I want that.

We will have duraceramic in kitchen, laundry, and 1 bathroom. Ceramic tile in master bath. Vinyl in kids bathroom.

If flooring first is better for any major reason, I'm willing to delay cabinet install.

Hoping for some quick replies...I'd like to get this straightened out ASAP tomorrow before the cabinetmaker gets started building.

Thanks
