How high to hang curtains? Paint color OK?

My home is currently occupied by renters. I will be moving back shortly and would like to spruce the place up.

When you walk in the house you are immediately in the dining room. The wall that that sliding glass doors are on are very tall. I was thinking this would be the wall I paint black. I also have white pinch pleat curtains I would like to use here but am unsure because of their height and how high they should be hung. What would be the most attractive? In the past they hung just above the sliding glass door. I know it would look better if they were hung higher. But how much? Should they be hung just below the large window or dramatically ABOVE the large window? Raising them also raises the problem of them being too short and then me needing to sew a coordinating panel on the bottom. Do I do that white also? Or a neutral color?

I really want to paint the rest of the house white too. Done with that blah color.

Any advice would be SO wonderful!!

If you have a great source of light, it is best to paint the opposite wall in a dark color that can absorb it.
I would suggest you paint your interior doors black instead, for some great impact. As for the curtains, I'd go for the drama and start them at the ceiling. They might look good with an 8" black stripe and then a panel of beige to finish off the bottom like these orange and black ones are done.

Thank u decoenthusiaste! I do love your ideas. I can absolutly paint a couple doors black in that room! The ceilin above the sliding glass doors isn't visible in my pictures, but it is at an angle, due to vaulted ceilings. Would u hang the curtains as high as possible before the slope/angle? I better get some black fabric! Thanks so much for the ideas!

Of course you can paint walls black and doors too. With white trim as in the entrance photo above, they look really good. It is all about contrast. I hope you are going to invest in new carpeting for the stairs or paint the risers black or white to go with you accent colour and instal new wooden treads varnished in a light wood tone (an easy fix for flimsy or badly worn treads). the thing with working with black is to pay attention to the light in the area. Is that a beautiful garden I see through the doors? Why hang anything here at all. I wouldn't. Let the light in. I have a black, white and cream colour scheme in my bedroom and kitchen and I love this because I change up the pops of colour with the season. Everything works...red, teal, bright green, blue...all beautiful.

The curtains, no matter what or where, should start at the ceiling. If you need to extend them use a contrasting color with a fabric that behaves similarly to what you are already working with. Black is a fabulous color and you will find that no two are the same so decide if you want a blue black or a brown black. You can play off this with the curtain trim. I painted all the walls in one of my projects with black blackboard paint. The extreme flat quality of this paint gives a wonderful soft effect and everyone who sees it sees a different color, even though it is really just blackboard paint. Expensive, because it only comes in quarts, but you are only doing one wall. Maybe splurge!

I would recommend keeping the wall the same color as the rest of the room, and bring your drama in with awesome floor to ceiling curtains. Do you plan on closing the curtains? If so you might find it challenging if they start near the ceiling.
