changing pool filter

I AM TOLD BY MY POOL SERVICE THAT MY FILTER IS TOO SMALL FOR MY POOL.IT IS PLUMBED WITH 1.5 LINE, there is only one skimmer, and there is only 2 returns, and only one drain,I have a pressure fed pool cleaner, AND THE POOL IS 20 YEARS OLD.I live in a desert climate.Bakersfield Calif. The filter seems ok in the winter, but in the summer the pool guy complains that he has to clean the cartridges like two to three time a month instead of quarterly. my pool is approximately 40,000 gallons. He is suggesting a pentair 4 carteridg DE cartridge filter. I have asked other pool professionals, they mostly recomend non de cartridge filters. My pool guy likes the ability to backwash the filter . I have a lot of orgnic matter in the pool. I also have a Pentair intelliflow VF 3050. It is very sensitive to pressure changes and it runs at higher speeds when the filter gets dirty. It appears to get dirty on a weekly basis I have been cleaning it every weekend. What do you all recomend?
