My mom's has been working great right next to her oven for 30+ years. (Not actually a pull out, not sure if they were around back then.) But it's a full cabinet with a full trash can. She also stores her trash bags there.

Sorry to revive this 11-year-old post, but this was exactly the question I wanted to ask. I am in the same position and am hoping the heat won't cook my trash too much. I am thinking of a stand-alone can in a cubbyhole without a cabinet but still with countertop over it.
