layout/appliance location help

I'm looking for help on rearranging my kitchen. At this time, I don't really want to make big changes, but I'm wondering if moving the appliances around a little would at least make it more workable.

Here is the current floorplan

My biggest complaints are:

1. The lack of work area next to the stove.

2. If one person is cooking, it is hard to a second person to be in the kitchen -- the cooker is blocking the fridge and moving hot pans from stove to sink.

Here is my current idea:

I would not change the cabinets along the left wall. I would build a cabinet to fill in the between the stove and current cabinets and then add some sort of cabinet/storage/work area along the top wall and between the refrigerator.

Does anybody know if this floorplan would work better? Are there any alternatives that would work within my current structure? Is there enough space for a walkway between the stove and fridge? The grids didn't come through when I scanned the layout, but I measure it as being 36".

It's so small it's making me blind.

Your proposal certainly improves matters. Why does the DW need to be so far from the sink and serve as a tripping hazard to the back door?

The distance between sink and dishwasher in the picture really aren't too scale. There is only about 18 inches between them. When they stole cabinet space for the dishwasher, they used part of a double cabinet instead of taking out a drawer unit. Luckily, there are two back doors, and this one goes to a porch that is only used for storage.

I think your new layout will help a lot. moving the fridge to where the stove is now, then running cabinets (upper and lower) from the side of fridge on around that corner will give you a good amount of new storage and counter space. you can put your mw there - close to the fridge for use.

I'd mark off (maybe with tape on the floor?) what your 'new' space will be between corner of fridge and corner of stove (or side cab?) and see how close you come to it when walking thru that space.

will you have enough space on the bottom wall to put a section of cabinet on both sides of the stove?

do you plan to put in a new counter top?
