This sounds similar but instead of just plopping the balls in the cake tin, roll out some of the dough & try spiralling them & using a muffin pan. Read the reviews & see if the texture sounds like what you remember. If it does, play around with it.

hmm. no oatmeal here. but it is a slightly sweet, yeasty and VERY tasty roll, which might satisfy your craving...and placing the dought into a muffin tin might satisfy my problem of not being very good at making "dough knots"!

Butterflake Rolls - Annie
2 packages active dry yeast
2 cups warm water
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp salt
6 to 6 1/2 cups flour
1 egg
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter, softened.
In mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar, salt and 2 cups flour. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Add egg and shortening, mix well, stir in enough flour to form a soft dough. Do not knead. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
In the morning, punch dough down and divide into 4 portions. Roll each portion into a 14 x 12 inch rectangle, spread 2 tbls butter over dough. Fold in half lengthwise and cut into 12 strips. Tie each strip into a knot, tuck and pinch ends under. Place 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Repeat with remaining dough. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour. Bake at 400 for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

san, have you tried that recipe for cinnamon rolls?

Thanks san, I'll try that one, I actually have tried the oatmeal one, while MIL loved the flavor I wasn't so sure about the texture, perhaps I'll play with it some more.

no--i have never attempted cinnamon rolls using ANY recipe! baking and housekeeping are two things that i am just plain lousy at! but i will say that i enjoyed the flavor of annie's recipe very much.
