What type of hood is it? The chunky pro style ones might look weird, but the slimmer traditional types will look fine. I currently have a pullout about 2" tall around that height and it looks and feels spacious. We're going to put in a similar hood in the remodel and the cabinet guy thinks it needs to be at 30" and I was thinking "gee that's kinda high!".

It'll function better lower, if that makes a difference...

fori-the hood is a GE cafe, a clunky pro style. The dimensions are 18 high X 30 wide X 21 deep. We have the hood installed right now at 30" until we realized we needed a bit more room for the ducting and decided to lower the hood to 27". At 30", it does seem to be really high, as unbelievable as that sounds. Also, this a 30" vent hood going over a 30" range, so I guess lower probably is better.

I bet you won't even notice the visual difference if you already have it in at 30" and just drop it three inches. I think the Cafe doesn't have all that...um...stuff? hanging in the back like some of the really bulky hoods do so I think it'll feel roomy enough. I'm not the one to ask maybe--it's going to be over my head either way (5'1")!

But, you know what's next (since you admitted it's already installed): PICTURES PLEASE!!! :)

I don't think I've ever used a hood a whole 30" above the cooking surface.

I've opened many PDFs for many hoods, so i can assure you 24" is standard.
I've seen many installed at 24" above the cooking surface also.

Fori the pullout ones are made for lower capture heights, you are correct. I have seen slimline pullouts and over the range microwaves at 24" above gas and as low as 18" over electric or induction. If you look at both spec and code on these types of hoods that is acceptable in many locales.

fori-forgive the mess.....this is my old range, the new range is sitting in foyer. The first picture is the hood at 30" above the range, the second picture is a piece of cardboard I attached to show where the hood will be at 27". What do you think?

Our hood wound up being 31" off the cooktop surface. I was a little concerned about hanging it much lower because my husband is about 5'11" and he just felt more comfortable with that hood height. With your heights I would think you'd be just fine with the 27", especially if you don't have a very deep hood.

OOhh I really like that cabinet style and color.

I'm supposed to be looking at something else, aren't I? O yeah, the hood. It really looks like a lot of space to me. I wouldn't worry about it at all (unless it just happens to be at an eye-poking height for someone). If you're doing gas, it'll be a tiny bit less because the burner grates usually bring it up a little over where an electric would be but even so I think it's a very generous-looking gap. If anything, I think it might end up looking BETTER lower. I really really think you're good here, unless you had a 30" tall backsplash mural or something!

By the way, I really like your cabinets. Are you going without handles on them?

dinajo-I am 5'4" and DH is 5'8". Don't remember last time I saw him cooking.....I am the chief cook and dish washer...LOL

Fori-Thanks for compliment on the cabs. They are American Woodmark Maple-Savannah door-Cognac stain. I am going to put stainless steel bow pulls on everything, doors and drawers. My range is also the GE Cafe dual fuel, but I think 27" will be fine. I was just afraid to do 27" because I thought it might look goofy, but you are right, the gap between stove and hood is still pretty generous.
