Would the right paint help?

My new home is not as "sun filled" as I would like. I prefer a very bright look. I had extra windows and some transoms put in but it didn't help.

My hardwood floors are very dark, and my woodwork is chalk grey. Not really a grey but a creamy white.

My family room seems to be the darkest of all - the color on the walls is a washed grey. I had help by a decorator picking all my colors. It seems to blah, lifeless and w/little light coming in it's depressing!

I need all new furniture for this room and I'd be happy to change the wall color.

But, will the right color give me a look similar to what I want? What should I look for in a color? I'm thinking a medium grey for the leather couch and torquise patterned chairs. Could I put torquise on the walls? It's a large room but soooo blah right now.

It's hard to envision without photos but it seems like you have a lot of grey in the room already. I'm not sure I would use a medium grey for the couch.

Perhaps white slipcovered couches with brightly colored accent chairs would brighten up the room. Turquoise chairs would look great with pale grey walls and a pretty slipcovered couch. You could use brightly colored artwork or photographs with white matting and frames and the walls.

I'm really into mercury glass right now and PB has some pretty lamps that would add sparkle to the room. I'm thinking about getting one to use in my living room, which is very neutral and needs a bit of bling!

I definitely need to see pix to say. I'd change the wall color to a brighter tone and see if that helps. You don't have to do washed out in a room with little light to keep it light. You can go with a medium tone that has a little punch to add some energy to the room. I also think a real white trim would help perk things up.
Again, I'd need to see pix to be better able to have a specific opinion....

    I love Juddgirl2's ideas.

Also, can you add skylights? Full spectrum bulbs in all of the fixtures?

If you want a bright sunny look I don't think gray is the way to go.

Ditch the grey! What happyladi said. Paint everything in yellows and yellow greens. Whatever paint colors you go with, should say "meadow" and have yellow undertones.
Aqua can be depressing -Nordic- or uplifting- Caribbean.

I agree about the yellows. Our house is darker than we'd like, and we did most of the house in various shades of yellow. It made a world of difference.

You might consider painting the room with Ellen Kennon paint. It's full spectrum paint. My daughter did her family room in Honeysuckle and it's warm and inviting without being too yellow. Yellow is tricky to paint.

Thanks for the suggestions - I think the lady that picked the paint colors was thinking that grey is the new neutral and that it is a rich look. But, in my house it's blahhhh look.
My only worry with a yellow color would be trying to find a couch, chairs, etc. that go with yellow. I dont'like the color blue at all. I like aqua because of the green in it. I love green.
My kichen cabs are creamy w/brown glaze - I can't imagine a yellow in the kitchen w/my cabs.
I wish I could add skylights, but the houses in this community are so close that when I was building and wanted skylights I went to the new empty house next door and damn you could have seen right into my FR from thier 2nd floor windows.
It may be best for me to get this house "staged" and sell it. Find a bright sunny home w/a view, rather than viewing the side of a neighbors house.

If privacy from above is preventing you from getting skylights, solar tubes might work.

But yes, the right paint will help.

Ellen Kennon doesn't just do yellow paint. Check out her website, there are many wonderful colors. If you like green the right green could brighten the room a lot.

I'll check her site. I guess until I find my new furniture actually picking a paint color will come after that.
