Just Finished!

This is a rosebud block, incorporated into a wall hanging. Pattern is by Eleanor Burns. I watched her make this on TV, and took notes. Machine pieced. Hand quilted. (My third hand quilting project.) The quilting took me only two weeks of spare time. I switched from no. 10 to no. 12 betweens, which are shorter, hence more rigid. Easier to make tinier stitches. I also switched from the tiny leather sticker, called a "thimble pad," to a "coin thimble." I liked the way it supported my finger joint. One of the ladies in my hand stitching group said I better get something better if I plan to hand quilt for 50 years.

I procrastinated about starting the hand quilting because I kept looking online for a design that would fit into a triangle. Gave up and sat down in front of the 'puter and made my own one day. A five petaled rose and leaves.

The lady who taught me how to hand quilt back in '99 said to just use a mechanical pencil. That didn't wash out very easily. So this time, I used two different pens that wash out with cold water. Rinsed out easily, and then I threw it in the dryer to pucker and I'm very pleased with the results. I had to touch up the prairie points with the iron. They got a bit puckery where they emerge from the seams, but that just makes them stand up more.

I gave it a hanging sleeve. It's 18 x 24".

Maryliz, it's very nice! What a good use for one block. My guild had a fun night last fall learning to do miniatures and this was the block we used.

Good work with the hand quilting!

That's beautiful. The black and white fabric gives it extra punch. Is that an African print?

Maryliz that's just beautiful! Your quilting is lovely and makes me want to give it another try and stick with it. I've really got to try it again.

REally pretty! I love your design. What kind of thimble is a coin thimble? I use a leather thimble & love it but am always open to suggestions.

What a wonderful job you did on this! I love the pattern, the colors, the prairie points, and the very nice hand quilting. I'm glad to see how well different widths of borders can look. I'm usually not brave enough to do that - and yours look fantastic.

Maryliz, Great job!!! When I handquilted, there were times I had to make my own designs, too. Sometimes ya just gotta do it your way! (VBG)

How lovely!! There's an old phrase that I don't remember correctly, but something like 'need is the root of invention'. Good for you in coming up with a pattern that works just right!

The "African prints" are actually olive and a faint, faint pink. I don't think they're African, per se, but I liked the curves of the print I used for the top border. My quilting followed the curves. I wish it showed in the photo.

The "coin thimble" is a leather thimble. The business end contains a small, metal disk with tiny depressions that help grip the eye of the needle. I can't use a regular, plain-vanilla thimble for very long, because my finger sweats. The leather thimble seems to work fine for me, but I think when this one wears out, I might want to make my own, so that I can put the metal disk a little closer to the actual TIP of my finger. But then, maybe that will be harder on the joints, which is why the leather sticker wasn't supposed to be good for my hand. The way I use the thimble now works the larger muscles across the palm of my hand. Bigger muscles are less likely to fatigue and wear out with repetitive use.

Keep going with the hand quilting, everyone! You only get better with practice. But keep your pieces small, so you don't take years to finish while you're just starting out.

Oh, and I want to add that the binding, which is not very visible, has tiny off-white and pink ovals, on an olive background. It ties in all the colors beautifully. And here's why I wanted to say this: When I first received that fat quarter in a bundle of fats, I thought, "Ew! This is a yucky fabric. I'm never going to use this one." Well, I held on to it, and it was only a matter of finding "something that goes with it." Oh, and I also had to realize that olive is the perfect compliment to faded red and dusky pink, which are great antique-looking colors. So I have come to love the color olive after all.

So my lesson is to hold on to your "uglies," in case you change your mind and/or they become useful.

Hey, that gives me an idea. I'm gonna start a new thread...

Beautiful Maryliz, I love hand quilted projects.
I am trying to master hand quilting using a 'spoon' but so far I haven't been able too.
