We used Hunter Douglas Silhouettes in our kitchen, breakfast nook, and family room when we built our home in 1993 and they still look as good as new. Here is a photo of them on three of the windows in our octagonal shaped breakfast nook. The middle one is open to show the slats with see-thru fabric in between and the other two are in a closed position. They are somewhat delicate looking, but very subtle which makes them pretty versatile. I hope this helps.

Sorry don't have pictures but we had them in the living room of our previous house. We did like them there, it was nice to be able to open/close for more light and still have the soft look. I don't think I would put them in a den -- we did wood blinds there -- but I don't think it would look terrible. Maybe if you did them in a stronger color? Ours were white/cream.

We had the silhouettes in our last home and LOVED them! I loved the versatility of them and being able to keep them open and still have some privacy. I don't think I ever raised them! Another popular look that might be nice in a library are the woven wood roman shades. They also come lined for privacy. Another alternative to consider. Good luck!
