Hampers Make Over

DD1 has one lined hamper she purchased at Shabby Chic. It is flat across the back and has a rounded front. SC only sale/sold hampers by Lloyd Loom. They look like wicker, but are not - they are a stronger material and were made in England.

I found two locally last fall. It's taken me awhile to give them a makeover. ;D For reference, the one on the left is 19" tall.

This is the way I found them. The funky shaped one (right) is missing a front foot. DH's job is to make a new one - or move one from the back if he cannot replicate and put the new one on the back:

Nasty, huh? ;D

Three cans of spray paint later.....

....and a visit to the upholstery shop (she sent me fabric from Shabby Chic)

....then a visit to the seamstress with drawings and pattern in hand (of funky shaped bottom). DD1 sent a queen size sheet for the liners. They are reversible. Seamstress left the top hem of sheet for the top, so it shows the SC label. (can't see it pictures). She even made a label on her machine for the second hamper. :D

This liner fits better than it looks. I just didn't take the time to flatten it out before I took the photo.

After DH makes the foot and DD1 assures me she has another job lined up, I will ship them to her. She has been working at SC since last June (her dream job). All of the stores will be closed by the end of the month. :(

I have about half of what Shabby Chic charges for one hamper in both of mine combined. :D

I love the fabric covered hamper! What a transformation! You are so nice to do this for your daughter.

Wow, I love them! You did a great job on them.

Nice job painting the hampers. The kidney shape is adorable. They turned out almost too nice to be relegated to dirty clothes! Is she going to use all 3 as hampers?

Very pretty - I really like the kidney shaped basket! You can tell they're of good quality.

Amazing transformation. They look great and you saved money over buying new ones. Fabulous.

Just charming! That is the kind of project I get in my head, but never seem to be able to complete. (Witness the vintage beach chairs still in my basement waiting to be re-slung...)

When I saw the title to your thread, I couldn't imagine what you were doing to make over hamsters. Need more coffee... :-)

*snort* Yes, I've been doing a make over on a few hamsters. They wore way too much make-up and their choice of clothes! ;D

Thanks! The rectangle one is the only large one she'll own. She'll put delicates in one, dry clean only clothes in another and the rest of her clothing in the third. She's high maintenance, but she's organized. lol

    Those are precious. Great job.

Lovely! You've truly given them a new lease on life. That's recycling at its best!

    Thank you both.

LOL I'll have to tell DD1's she's "being green." She gets SO tired of hearing "green, green green" all the time. Then I remind her she is in NorCal. lol

Beautiful! How in the world did you attach the hooks(?) to the inside of the hampers from which the lining hangs? They look so professionally done--very talented!

Lovely, Allison! And not surprising, coming from you.

(I think the hamsters are wearing too much make-up because they are sensitive about needing their teeth whitened, and are trying to draw your focus...)

    LOL bronwynsmom.

    Thank you both.

sujafr, both hampers have a lip around the top - you can sort of see it in the photo of hamper that is open to show shape. I pre-drilled the holes in the underneath of the lip in order to get the cup hooks started. It's not easy trying to screw in hooks at that angle, so I finished tightening them with a pair of pliers. I put a napkin over the hooks since they are coated in white vinyl (so I wouldn't scratch them).

The Shabby Chic hamper she has is also lined and has hooks, so I just copied what she did.

Beautiful, Allison! I love the fabric and it adds so much to the basket. It matches your daughter's dig perfectly. :)

Thanks for the how-to on the hooks that hold the lining! Now that I know, I can see. What a clever method--maybe I'm just dull, but couldn't figure that out on my own. I'm even more impressed with your accomplishments as I take another look!

    Alison
You are the QUEEN of makeovers - now I have a few here, when you get the time!
    Love it

Thanks. DH is home and will make the leg this weekend.

I just received my last package from Shabby Chic. So sad. :( The store is at 60% off now. She expects it to close in 2 weeks, 3 tops. :(
