Quick update.. floors refinished

Just wanted to stop back and give a quick update.. I had the floors refinished this week. As some may remember, I had the entire living area painted in BM Anjou Pear which I love love love-- here it appears green, other times of day it's yellow and others still, a muddy chartreuse. A real chameleon!

I removed old carpet that had been on the floors since 1976 (newspapers under the carpet confirmed this!). The oak floors beneath weren't in too bad of shape but they had a distinct orange tone. .. which I had refinished in "Early American". I was hesitant-- I didnt want the floors to be too dark but I didnt want the yellow tones of the natural finish. My flooring guy took me to see another house he'd done in the same neighborhood -- and that helped cinch it, I decided to go with the stain. I am very pleased with the results...

I have to paint trim and doors yet and work on window treatments but most additional work will wait until after I move in.

Thank you all.. it's a great transformation! It no longer looks llike my grandparents' house-- it's really starting to feel like my home. I adore the wall color and love to walk around the house looking at all the different incarnations of color. :)

Shee.. it's minwax. The guy is from up in your area and I am thrilled with him. He was very attentive (even taking me to another house to see the stain on a larger area than the sample he put on the floor).. PLUS, he came in MUCH cheaper than anyone down here.

And here's a photo of where I started.. it's been a long go but I was doing this on a shoe string so I needed the time. I really didnt want to invest in the floors NOW but I came to the realization that I'd never take on the hassle once I moved in.

I am so glad I decided to move forward.

Gorgeous. I LOVE them. I wish I had gone a bit lighter with mine, I think what you have is my favorite looking floor.

I really do like that cooler tone, and it's such fun to see you turn it into your home. I'm smiling as I imagine your grandparents getting a good look at your personalizing. No matter what, they'd be glad you're so happy with the way it's coming along. :)

Those floors are amazing did you do something in the kitchen too? I seem to recall there was some issue there.

Looks really wonderful - the floors both with the paint and the vintage of the home. I think your grandparents are smiling!

Oh, funky! That Minwax Early American looks great! What a wonderful floor color -- lovely with Anjou & probably plays nicely with furnishings too.

Your little ranch is blossoming nicely into a rather chic 21st century home.

The floors really are the right balance between light and dark. They look light in sunlight and medium brown in regular light. This works well in this small house.

I was concerned about the variation in board color because they used short boards throughout the house. As you can see there is some variation but it seems to be just enough to be interesting.

Thank you all for your kind words. Rosie and Oly, my grandmother is still living and is very excited for me to move in. She's encouraged me along the way but has chosen to wait to see it until I am settled. It makes her very happy to know that I am caring for her home and making it my own.

CLBlakely, I removed the carpet in the kitchen to reveal tile that is covered with dried on nasty carpet glue that isnt easily removed. I'd considered trying more extreme methods to remove the glue but everyone agrees that it's wasted effort-- if it can be removed, the tile is likely to be stained. I havent decided what to do yet. Carrying the wood into the kitchen isnt a good option and I don't want to replace flooring until I remodel the kitchen next year. Whatever I do will likely go on top of the existing (asbestos) tile. For now, I will likely get an inexpensive rug.

Again, thank you all for your encouragement and ideas!

Oooh, I love it! I so wish we could refinish our floors, but we'd have to pretty much move out temporarily to do it. DH really regrets not doing it before he moved in. Now we have too much stuff!

gsciencechick, that was exactly why I did them now! It wasn't in the budget-- but I ended up robbing other areas of the budget to do it now. I am so glad I did.

The floors are gorgeous! I also love love love the Anjou pear wall color - warm and sophisticated all wrapped up together.

Love the floors; they look great with the Anjou! It really feels good when you hit the mark, doesn't it? Am so enjoying watching the transformation!

Thank you, Laura and Lizbeth! Yes, it does feel great.. I absolutely love love love the anjou pear also. It hit exactly the sweet spot I was hoping to find.. I think the floors and wall color bring style and character to the shoebox style house without overwhelming it.

I used a big chunk of my furniture budget to complete the floors so the rest will be slower to evolve. That's ok. I am fairly clear on my vision and I will get there a piece at a time!
