Minimum Door Height - Attic Remodel

Oh, the easy attic remodel job!

Everything's been running surprisingly smoothly, but this is our latest snag: in order to fit a bedroom door under the roofline, we've had to frame it in at 75.5 inches. I'd prefer to keep our door width at 30" and keep it short rather than go with a narrower door and try to get to 80".

I can't find any reference to door height in the building codes I've been able to come across. Does anyone know if there are minimums/egress requirements? As far as I can tell my city just uses the IRC without specific modifications mentioned on this topic.

Thanks!

In most jurisdictions the "Egress" requirements are listed in the local "Fire Code".

In my jurisdiction the primary egress door for any room which is used as a sleeping room is 32"W x 70" H and the room must have a secondary egress which may be a Window or door with a minimum opening of 24" x 24". If the secondary egress is a window the window sill may be no greater than 32" above the finished floor.

When using a door or window as a secondary egress if the lowest portion of the opening is greater than 12' above finished grade it must be provided with a permanently affixed stairway or approved escape ladder.

It would be nice to know what the layout is like. I had a door height problem with a second story remodel and the architect got around that by putting is a landing and a turn that allowed us to be code compliant...and it looked good.
