My DH built 3 of these purple martin houses to "decorate" the outside.

Very nice! Are you also hoping to get some Martins in them?

Two of them are full, the third has one couple in it. They are so interesting to watch..they are our outdoor entertainment.

That house is wonderful! And you are so lucky to have residents!

We have had a purple martin house for many years, but it stays vacant.

But we did see a rose breasted grosbeak recently! And we have a pair of nesting bluebirds.

Wonderful-both DH and the house! :)

Lovely outdoor decorations and I am impressed with how your trees are growing - I remember seeing your yard when everything was tiny.

I love the bird house. What a talented dh you have. Now I have to ask, HOW did you get the birds to nest in it? We've had a martin house up, now in it's 2nd season, and not one purple martin has even landed on it. They sit on the electric lines and fly around though. Dh even bought a CD with purple martin sounds to attract them. Nada. We do have a couple of blue birds nesting in it this year though.

It was the strangest thing. Last year when DH finished the first house, he went to put it on the post, as he was carrying the house out from the garage, the purple martins were flying around him...they could hardly wait for the house to be put up. This last house he just finished a couple of weeks ago, the birds from the other two houses flew around it and checked it out. We do have a couple residing in the new house. I am sure next year it will be full also. Marti8a I dont know why you dont have them nesting in the house. Did you buy the house or did you build it yourselves. They are very specific in the dia of the hole, and the height of the house. Also the color of the house should be light.

I love the martin houses. I do not have one, but am considering purchasing one. You are right that they are very entertaining. What height should a martin house be, please.

Looks and reads as if your husband did a wonderful job on his builds.

walnutcreek, the pole should be a minimum of 10 feet off the ground not including the house itself. The higher the better though.

Love the purple martin houses. Reminds me of my late grandfather who had many PM houses on his property, full to the brim with martins. Thanks for posting, had all but forgetten all about those wonderful houses he built. Lucky you, your DH is a handy guy!

It is a metal purple martin house and was fil's before they moved. At their house, the house was always filled with martins. I think when we get some blue bird houses up and can take this one down, I'll scrub it out good in case they just don't like the smell or something.

And Martins eat many times their weight in mosquitoes every day!
    Now I have another "want"....

marti8a, purple martins are very clean birds. The house needs to be taken down and cleaned every year after the birds leave!

We usually put a sprayer on the hose and blast the interior of the house, but I thought I might use soap & bleach this year.
