Typical payment plans for interior design vary. The most common, depending of scope and size of project would be, a retainer, usually 50% and balance on completion or milestone payments. Designers usually purchase items for homeowners, of which would be paid up front. Paying 100% for something not done, does not in most cases make sense. Hope this helps...

Reiterating what JM Design said, I would not require or expect 100% fees up front, unless it was for just a few hours of time, while purchases on behalf of clients are either 100% paid up front, or if I arrange for the client to pay the vendor directly where the vendor pays me a commission on the back end, the client might be able to pay 50% when the order is placed & the balance on delivery. I tend to work 'smaller' projects where I receive a retainer applicable against my time, & it is replenished as we move forward.
