I do. I used to try to rig up something myself, but I finally broke down & bought a thread stand.

I use cone thread also. My husband made me similar thread stand with a wood base.

Same for me. Bought my base. I just use a neutral ivory color for most everything.

If you can't rig up something like that thread stand, you could just wind two bobbins. It would give you the added benefit of knowing when the (real) bobbin is ready to run out. That might be especially useful when doing free motion quilting. I hate to run out right in the middle of one of my "loopy loos."

I have used it. I set the cone of thread in a large glass jar on the floor behind the machine and fed the thread up from there through the machine.

It worked fine as long as I didn't kick it over in my sewing frenzy!...a wild woman I am sometimes! LOL

I think the main thing is that the thread has to go UP. I had it in a jar beside my machine and that pulled it against the jar and didn't work AT ALL.

You can see the little setup I jury-rigged here byt running the thread UP through the handle of a binder clip and from there it goes to my machine (which is lower than the clip). I'll probably splurge and get a thread stand the next time I order thread though...

I have a thrad stand like the one in the helpful link below (sold by Superior Threads). I've had it for years, going back to BQ (Before Quilting). Works quite well.

The product description is very accurate - don't bother buying the all-plastic version of this thread stand design - they just tip right over. You need a heavy base.

Don't know anything about cone thread, but love my thread stand. I wind my binding around a toilet paper core and put it on the thread stand when I sew the binding on. Keeps the binding off the floor. It also seems to work better for invisible thread.

Fran, that's brilliant! I use the toilet paper/paper towel core too, but still fight have to keep struggling with THAT while putting the binding on.
