Wainscot..

Thinking about doing a wainscot in a newly built entertainment room and saw a few web sites advertizing kits made out of MDF. I'm considering either Wall Panel or Flat Panel and would appreciate it if someone could tell me if they've used this type and how it looks finished. I've perused my local HD and to me it looks cheezy. I'm looking to paint it so i'm not looking for high end.

Thanks in advance.

HD and Lowes carries a primed beadboard from GP..It's pre primed, 3/16" thick, not the shiny "ice" one. MDF is stable and put up properly, looks nice. comes in 4'x8' sheets. give me 2 weeks and I'll post pictures..... basement/lower level still in progress

Last year I used the prepainted MDF to install wainscoting in our guest bath. While it looks nice, I wasn't thrilled with the shiny surface texture and uniformity of the panels, to me it didn't look close to real paneling. This is the bathroom.

I just finished installing birch bead board panels that I purchased at Home Depot. The 4 x 8 panels were unfinished, so I primed them all one day, waited 24 hours and then cut and installed them the following day. These are just two photos of parts of the room, I also put it up in the back splash area behind all the kitchen counters and underneath the counter bar. I can definitely see the difference, and for the slight increase in cost, think the birch panels are far superior. It only took me an hour to second coat all the panels after they were installed. You can't tell much difference between the MDF and birch in these photos, but you can really see the difference in person.

Thanks so much for the photos nanny2a and look forward to seeing yours kcinkc71. Also, would beadboard be used primarily in kitchens/bathrooms? Or it can go anywhere?
    Thanks again.

Beadboard can be used anywhere. I have it thruout my house, except in the bathrooms and kitchen!
    Here's a hallway......

Here is beadboard in various different rooms throughout my home. It is MDF. In our current home we used the less expensive "real wood" and it was inferior in many regards. The MDF is about twice the cost, but beautiful and easy to work with & finish.

acountryfarm - very nice work and thank you. One question -was the top and bottom rails and top cap finished moulding (if so could you list what you used) or did you make them?

we found a company who milled beadboard via a CNC into 1/2in MDF 4x12 panels. we wanted a random beadboard pattern and provided them a random "pattern". At 12 ft wide, there was virtually no seams on a wall.

acountryfarm- I love all that beadboard throughout your home. It really looks outstanding!! We have those horrible popcorn ceilings that were so popular in the early 90's, and I'd love to just cover them all with beadboard and molding and see them disappear. We have the angled ceilings on our second floor where the dormers are, and this application would look so much better. You did a great job!

tim022- Thank you. Yes to your question, all pieces were finish moulding. I am trying to find invoices so I can tell you the name of beadboard top cap. But the top of the baseboard is Brick Mould. We routerd out the back so it would sit down on the baseboard a bit , if that makes sense.
The baseboard cap is not something we originally planned but the co. that was supplying our finish woods, milled down the baseboards to 1/2 in for some reason. I was out of town and came back and saw the entire top floor of our home with these very narrow baseboards, obviously not ok with me. So we came up with this option as to not have to take everything off. This made the top profile look wider. I actually think it turned out so much better for our home. Thanks again, & as soon as I get the name of top cap I can pass it on to you. It is one piece, so was very easy. We did router that also.

nanny2a -- Thank you so much. Our beadboard turned out awesome. The ceilings were tung & groove pine that was installed strip by strip. It does look beautiful and was exactly what I wanted. It really is pretty reasonable and adds so much. We also have it in the kitchen if you are interested in seeing that.

acountryfarm - yes, I'd love to see your kitchen, too! Your house looks lovely and from what I've seen, just the type of construction that appeals to me.
