Challenge. 6' kitchen

Ok you tko's. Here is a fun challenge. I have a little cottage I am going to move a part time nanny into. She's a young adult and will be going to college as well as helping me out. I'm so excited lol.

So here is the problem. At first we thought a microwave and fridge would be fine but as dh and I talked we realized that was exactly what we had when we were remodeling and we hated it! I don't want her washing tea cups in the bathroom sink!

So I have a six foot long wall, uninterrupted by windows. The ceiling is 8'. There is a window to the left but it's 26" out so we can do a full depth counter but it's far too low to put a sink or counter (ie do an l shape) I'm front of it. A shelf would interfere with upper cabs opening on the 6foot wall.

I need to put a small range, sink and 24" fridge on that wall....as well as a microwave up over the sink or range...maybe that would buy me the exhaust for the range....I have the fridge but I'd like to try to do this for under 1500.....

Want to have fun and design me a quick kitchen? Did I mention that the cottage was built in 1882 so I want to stay away from too modern where it comes to the cabs.... Obviously I can design one, but I am hoping it might be fun for some of y'all and you would give me some ideas I haven't thought of.

I'm going to go out and measure the corner next to the future kitchen really quick and see if I could freestanding the fridge there....across from the six foot wall she wants to use a little table as an island/work space so we are limited to the one wall.

Maybe an undercounter fridge, with a sink next to it? Possibly have the microwave above the fridge and a cabinet over the sink? Where do you plan to have counter space? I can't imagine dripping wet dishes across the floor, to the island/table...so maybe skip the range and have counterspace, instead?

You could do a cute cabinet above the sink with maybe glass doors and fabric. Or a plate rack with cup hooks and a narrow pantry, by the sink...if there's room. I don't know how you'd fit in the range, unless the fridge fits in the other area. Still not much counterspace, though.

I'd like to give her a bigger fridge (I had an under counter in school and hated it). But counter space is my concern as well. I want a little drain board next to the sink. I would likely get a stainless lid made for the range to give her that space when not using the cook top. I did find a 20" range.

I really want the sink on that wall because it backs up to the bathroom which makes running drains easier. The floor was poured slab sadly a few years before us so I don't want to have to see a jack hammer involved :). I did measure that other wall and I would have room for a counter over there. I'm not sure it would work for the range because it's below a window and the clearance to a doorway between that wall and the proposed kitchen is about 23 and some change....you wouldn't want a range poking into the walkway to the bathroom.

But a countertop for prep, even just three or four feet on that other side would help the space flow. Especially if I could tuck the fridge there....I have to get specs (or buy another one, which is an option).

Now where to put the dishwasher and trash compactor...and the ice machine....lol Kidding!

In a worst case scenario....I once saw a cabinet over a sink modified with a mesh base, cup hooks and wine stem drying stick things which was above the sink and acted as a drying rack. I am trying to find pics (saved and lost lol).

If I could alter the window/s I would because I have more so that's no biggie, but the structure is under really stringent protection so I can't do that :(.

I'll take better measurements and try to post. I'm getting ready to head to napa so this might have to wait if I don't get my goober together lol.

I have til mid June and she will be here in may to help configure things but I want the kitchen in place before she moves in.

Start with a 30'' over the range microwave/speedoven/venthood set in an upper cabinet. A 2 burner indiction hotplate can sit on the counter. The fridge can go underneath in the base cabinet. Other than a sink, that is a working kitchen. And you would still have 3' 6'' counter left over.

I might have blown the budget but, hey, it ain't my money.

I was going to suggest the same as bill02, but with the addition of a Breville Smart oven. It gives you plenty of cooking options and two can be moved around. Post a drawing or picture of the space and of course we'll all have fun with it! Enjoy Napa tonight :)

Look at European kitchens or motorhomes or boats for inspiration. They often cram quite a bit into a very small space.

But, if you have to have a 24" fridge, and a 20" range, there's only a 15" sink in a 18" sink cabinet and only 10" left. I'd suggest a two burner cooktop instead of the range, and use an OTR convection oven or Advantium above the cooktop and it can act as the oven for the space. That gets you a lower cabinet for storage of a few pots below and some silverware in a drawer at least rather than no lower cabinet space. And some room for counter space.

So, that' s a 24" cabinet above the fridge, a 30" cabinet above the OTR MW, and that leaves room for an 18" cabinet for dishes. I'd suggest utilizing the Ikea Grundtal system that has the fold down dish drainer rather than a sink with a drainboard. You don't have room for a drainboard. Or, there's always the Euro dishdrainer cabinet.

Not sure of the dimensions here, but they even managed an 18" DW!

Maybe you could access the plumbing in the wall via a peninusla so that you could increase the counter space? This boat uses a double peninsula for a very skinny person in the middle! If you did the refrigerator under the cooktop like they did here instead of a tall one, you could gain 24" of precious counter space.

You guys rock! Bill...lol on the budget :). But good ideas. Green...wow, thank you and thanks for finding that cabinet I was trying to describe. I think it's kind of cool :).

I was sort of sold that I had to get a range but I'm liking the two burner with a convection etc microwave.

I like the idea system. I probably want to go with painted cabs to fit the house but that system would fit in well and she will need the function.

Im going to have to think about the fridge and draw the joint out. I'd really like to have a tall one but don't want a monster. I am toying with wanting a new one anyhow because the one I have is black and I don't like that for a Victorian feel.

And I have to design my husbands office at the same time lol (he is giving up the cottage for her). Thank god it's huge :).

If the fridge will fit on the other side (undercounter or not) than I think the 20" range is a great idea! If you had counterspace between the sink and range...and more counterspace across from it, I think that would work really well.

She's in college, so as long as everything functions...and she has a little prep space, I would be more concerned about it looking period, than lots of appliances. This is going to have a great vibe to it and when I was that age, I would have sacrificed function for style! Let her enjoy it, while she still can and doesn't have to cook for others :)

My parents have a snack kitchen in their downstairs. They have a two burner cooktop - cheap open coil type perfect for a rental or nanny unit. Microwave/fan above. Google 2burner cooktops.
Decide how much it's going to bother you if downstairs cooks strong smells with little ventilation... Some tenants microwave frozen meals or eat out, some put on the wok or broiler and cook lots of smelly stuff.

2' fridge, 6" pull out for canned good/jar storage (and counter space between fridge and sink), 1.5' for sink, 1' counter top and 1' for 1-2 hob/burner cook top.

could the toaster oven/small breville and mw go on that other wall and still have space to pass thru for the bathroom? depending on the space there they could go side to side w/counter under them (angled corners on that and base cabs?). hght depending on hers. If she's 5' you don't want them up high (like over the cooktop). Nasty burns could result.

drawer under sink for a small trash bin. drawers under counter/cook top for silverware and cooking /prep utensils, pans, plastic ware and misc.

possible shallow base cabs on the other wall? how much space on that wall? if mw/oven go at counter hght, then shallow cabs above and below.

    slide out helper space -

Check out the 30 inch mini kitchen by Avanti. Too cute! They sell them with induction cooktops too.

My motorhome's cooktop is recessed into the counter and covered with flush lids when not in use. So is the sink. The lids add much needed workspace. The lids live under the sink stored on edge when not in use.

Don't forget a flip up counter on an end run. We had one in our motorhome that gave me about 18" extra counter when up. It would block an the doorway when up but once we were both in there it didn't matter. Also...pull outs are great and I think a 2 burner cooktop and Breville would be perfect. You could cook anything for one with those... even if she had a guest it would function.

If you did a small stainless sink with an integrated drainboard like the Ikea Fyndig, that would serve as a landing space for hot pans as well as a drainboard. I personally would choose a toaster oven over a microwave, but ask her what she would prefer. With either of those and a 2 burner cooktop she would be all set.

This tiny kitchen in Germany may give you some ideas. It has a 2 burner cook-top, a speed oven/microwave, and small built in fridge. For the entire renovation check the link.

I want you to know y'all kept me up thinking about this last night lol.

I was researching all of these options :). It was fun.

Lav, you did hit a weird key on this little kitchen. Form is (for the first time in my life) more important than function...but just barely :). I need this kitchen to have the right feel. I was in there last night and found an antique fridge I forgot I owned. It's gorgeous, small and on its queen Anne legs would give a totally appropriate feel to the place without taking up a bunch of visible weight. It's actually short enough that a small microwave could go on top. I have to get out the measuring tape and really check it out but it might fit better than the new fridge in the corner opposite my six foot wall.

Then that would allow me plentry of space for a 20" range with a micro hood. Cooking smells aren't a huge issue....she's not a gourmet :) and while we do have the abysmal micro ventilation...there are windows flanking the kitchen on either side in this tiny space. Or I could skip the microwave hood and put in a decent one as we could ventilate out of the wall location easily on this wall.

I love that little Ikea sink. I was thinking about a butcher block countertop from them as well. With the sink on the six foot wall and the fridge on the other (I decided last night that I'll do that either way...the fridge has to be on that wall for any reasonable function...even if I have to buy another). I can give her a little bit of counter space.

Steph I woke up in the middle of the night thinking...where do I put the trash lol. While I rarely believe in a sink without a disposal, in this kitchen I might forgo that for trash space. I also can leave out a fridge/freezer combo because she can use our extra fridge and freezer right across the path in the cellar. She would still have the fridge inside but could keep ice cream elsewhere.

Ok more thinking...maybe I'll go play on Ikeas kitchen planner and see what I can cook up later today.

Get a rear drain sink and the trash can sit in front. I have a 1 HP disposal and my trash and recycling in front of it because I didn't have an extra cabinet space for a pullout.

No doubt they are expensive, but the mini-kitchens are cool.

Yes, I was just going to look for the yestertec link. Here's another some folks here may remember, the kitchen for a 170 sf studio in NY. Her website also has another teeny kitchen she did that is something like the yesterec armoire kitchens, only built from scratch in a little recess.

Igloo- Can you sketch the dimensions of the kitchen...and maybe the cottage, in general? I have a few ideas, but I don't know if they'll work, without seeing the space :)

I agree that a young person this age will not be too concerned with cooking.
How about getting a table with a Formica top?
You can get nice ones that look like wood. I have one that looks like maple! She can do prep on it and even put hot plates on it.

Agreeing with the idea that a table with a formica top (outside of the 6' run) can serve as prep space.

We built a granny flat for my in-laws. It's dimensions are a bit more generous than you have - but not by much. We could easily have cut the counter space to the right of the sink. My MIL is an Italian cook - so when she needs more space she sits at the kitchen table to prep.

Here's a pic of what it looked like before doors /drawers were added. Now, 5 years later, there's a fridge in the nook to the right, but for the first 6 months the little under counter fridge served.

Wow, the yesteryear is fabulous! I'd actually consider that...are they a million bucks? I save the link for our beverage center when we do our master. They are so cool.

The other all in ones are too modern for the 120+ year old space.

I love the mil uc :). Gorgeous and compact. Now I just have to visit that tiny kitchen link and I'm off to bed to ponder again. I'll take measurements tomorrow and see if I can get the real place posted here.

'so when she needs more space she sits at the kitchen table to prep'

that's what I'll be doing again. It's what I did for 12 yrs w/ 4 kids. I only had a 3' stretch of counter between the cook top and the sink, so I often sat at my table (not more than 3' away) when I had a lot of prep.

    > I'd actually consider that...are they a million bucks?

    They have a budget line:

Styled with our least expensive options, the Starting price is $7970 plus shipping. Other options will make this price increase, but its Average Price is $9801 plus shipping. That's about $3400 less than the UK68B's average price noted above!!!

Forgot to say there's a pdf linked on the budget armoire page where you can cost out all the options.

Lol thanks writers lock. I was so tired last night I guess I had readers block :).

I think we will save that for the master suite (where I really do want to hide the coffee bar because when we do tours I like to make it as Victorian as possible up there) but that might shock dh when he asks me what the budget is for the cottage lol.

That said I did take an idea from there. I have armoires coming out my ears and while I still have to measure, I think I could put one on the same wall I'm thinking of putting the fridge which she could use as a pantry. I don't mind modifying one to fill that purpose at all (lots of shelves). There is also a nook just past the kitchen wall where I could place one easily if the other wall won't work.

Today between booking winery tours :) and basking in the sun....dang it just started raining.....ok today I think I'll measure the room since I can't find a drawing of it I thought we got from the po.

Steph....her table will likely sit just that far away as well :). I have to get measurements from her so I can be sure it will fit, otherwise I'll get her one.
