Another prep sink question...

Finally made a decision about the countertop! So, now I need to figure out if I should add a prep sink. I've been reading many posts about function, but I'm stuck on placement.

Here's the plan...and while I like the idea of a bar sink...it looks like the peninsula would be a better choice and use it for a prep sink, but I don't want to lose my baking/prep space.

I'm planning on using butcher block countertops with a slab of marble inset on the peninsula (now all one level) so would the sink fit in the corner? Would it be too close to the range? It's a range, not a cooktop, with a second oven (raised) and microwave on the opposite wall.

As for that area...I was thinking of having granite there (not asking, just saying...since this is NOT a countertop question LOL) so it would be heat resistant. Great place for pans coming out of the oven, full of cookies :)

Here's the plan (again) just to show you the layout...

It seems like a corner sink might make the most sense, but. . . Where will your hot dishes land if you have dirty dishes around your sink and cookie makings on the peninsula?

Another question: Have you considered one of the newer style ranges that has 2 ovens under the rangetop? If you got one of these, it would really open up the area where the O/M is located for a longer bar. . . bigger hutch. . . portable cart on wheels that could be brought into the kitchen. . . pantry cupboards along that wall . . .

I'm concerned for how it will feel to walk in on that big box of an oven from your mudroom area, maybe it's going to feel like walking around the hulk. And when the oven door is open, it will block the pathway between the oven and the peninsula (this is what we get when I start thinking about other's kitchens at odd moments of the day. .. sorry)

Laughable- All going points, but I think it would be the same as having the fridge there, but not open as often. However, if you think the fridge would work better...I am totally open to suggestions!

I really want/need a raised oven, after picking up too much hay on a few occasions (ouch!) but it could go where the fridge is. Would that be better? I'm really open to suggestions on appliance placement...I'm just glad I found an overall layout that gives me the dining table and the stools, across from the sink, so I'm looking out the window (into the sunroom) and not just the mess on the stove! :)

Laughable- I tried a few other layouts, but nothing seemed to work as well...but I do think switching the fridge and oven/microwave might be better. What do you think?

I left the sink by the fridge, for drinks, etc. but I could still move it to the peninsula if that looks like a better idea.

Each square equals 6" so hopefully, this is a little easier to read :)

Table seating will be tight. If you have seating at both the peninsula and table, you should have a minimum of 60" b/w them...I have around 54" and I can tell you from experience that it's not enough!

As to the sink...I think it would be more useful in the peninsula...but it might get in the way of your cookie making! How often do you bake and need that 5+ feet of space?

If you put the sink on the end of the peninsula, then:

    1.5" overhang + 18" sink base + 36" cabinet + 3" filler + 27" cabinet facing the table

I don't think a corner prep sink will work b/c you have too little space b/w the corner and range. The base of the "U" is not very wide, unfortunately. Besides, if it's on the end of the peninsula, will be easily accessed by others for drinks, etc. w/o getting in the way of someone working in the kitchen.

Buehl- Hi! I agree and I'm not thrilled with the fridge or the oven in the aisle space. So...I'm going to try this one more time.

What if I use the original L-shape kitchen, with the work table, but flip the two spaces? I've gotten some great feedback and one of the things mentioned was accessing the sunroom, from the kitchen/dining area, without going through the mudroom/laundry.

Here's the plan...with three 30" french doors to the sunroom (the left one opening). There's a 4' opening into the foyer, But I can make this up to 5' if necessary. The mudroom laundry is still accessible to the sunroom, with a 3' door and the farm sink is under the window, in the butler/style pantry. Also have the tall pantry unit, between the two doors.

The sunroom is now 15' x 23' which makes it easier to fit in the woodstove and still be able to use the dining room french door. What do you think? Any changes/improvements? Does spacing look okay? I really appreciate your help...along with all the other GWers, who have helped me make this a much better kitchen! :)

Now, I can use the marble worktable, again!

The corner niche, by the oven, is there to hide the plumbing from the laundry area. The washer and farm sink need to be plumbed through the wall and down to the basement, since that area is cement slab. The dryer will vent out the 'south' wall, making that base cabinet a little shallow, but great for storing vases and other smaller items.
