asbestos removal

I am purchasing a fix up property that needs a ton of work. I will be moving some walls and removing some walls also. We had it tested for asbestos and several of the areas showed 3% asbestos. I was wondering if I was relatively careful and kept the drywall damp when removing the walls, using HEPA masks etc, and properly discarding the asbestos--if there should be a problem. All of the asbestos companies make such a big deal of it, I was wondering if I really needed to pay a company 10k to abate it. This is a duplex that I plan to move into after about 2 months of extensive work. Also, I was planning to have new drywall placed on top of the old popcorn ceiling to cover that area. I fugured that would be a good way of taking care of the popcorn texture and containing the asbestos. Any help is greatly appreciated.
