Have you checked your local thrift stores? My local ones often bag buttons off unsold items into bags by color or a mixed bag for a dollar a bag. You can find some nice ones that way. They might not do that in your area but it is worth a try - especially for crafts.

I've found a lot of buttons for sale at garage and tag sales. A more efficient way of finding them is to go to your local Craigslist webpage and open up the Garage Sale area under For Sale.

Send an email to each of the garage sales advertised in your area and ask if they have buttons for sale and for how much. It will save you gas and you'll know exactly where to go on Saturday or Sunday.

I do this whenever I'm looking for something specific.

They aren't sewing crafts, at least not 100%, but what better place to ask about buttons than on a sewing forum? ;-)

They're for tree decor crafts. The main things I want them for that don't include sewing are characters I found on http://www.marthastewart.com/article/button-ornaments?autonomy_kw=Button%20Santa&rsc=image_1, & a wreath & tree elsewhere. The wreath is flat with the buttons glued to a "doughnut" & the tree is upright with buttons strung one atop the other.
