Buffet advice needed - Picture

I have this very old buffet that's in great shape but needs some good polishing/light staining.

Ignore the old microwave sitting next to it, lol, this room isn't decorated at all, and I think chairs will be a few months down the road. So I'm going to decorate the buffet so at least I'll have something nice in there. :)

Here's the ceiling light fixture:

Since this room is on the dark side, no windows, I want to brighten the buffet a bit. I'm going to put some kind of light colored runner on it.

Should I decorate with one or two buffet lamps? I'd only turn them on at night just for the ambience.

If you have ready pictures of your buffets, can you post them to give me ideas? I can't open up topics in the Gallery for some reason.

Oh, live plants are out, no light in there at all.

I ma sure some are tired of this pic LOL. But here you go. I am showing it at night w/ lights to give you an idea. I can't tell how long your buffet is but ours is 5ft so this shows how 2 lamps would look. I think yours is shorter ?? Also you can see what a light runner looks like...I have of course light wood and LOTS of natural light from the windows.

I love your wall color...is is so luscious and that light fixture...that is WONDERFUL !! You are so lucky. I am looking forward to seeing finished pics. Caroline

What a difference between night and day! I love the blue. After we started the painting is when I kind of fell in love with the blues, but it was too late to change my mind. :)

My buffet is 45 1/2 inches. I like the idea of the two pictures, or even one large one for me, maybe rectangle shape.

Since I'm too far away to buy fresh flowers, I may break down and buy some really nice silk ones for the centerpiece, that would help brighten the area.

Question, since this room is the main pass-through from the kitchen to the living room, should I put a runner on the floor or a larger area rug? The room won't be used that often, and the LR will have a large area rug in the back, coming from the sitting room/pass-through. Here's a picture I posted the other day to give you an idea of the floor space. As you can see, there's plenty of room for a seating area on the right. But I want porch furniture first! lol And I know the area rug for the LR will cost an arm and a leg, so I was wondering if I could get away with a nice runner?

amcofar: what a sweet thing to say...thank you.

oakleyok: about a runner or larger rug. I think you need to mark off how far out the chairs etc will come as the runner would go in front of them and also in front of the sideboard. I personally only like runners in hallways and I like them to line up with the doorways...but that is just me. I think a reg size rug would be better for this area as it seems that it will find more use once you get the chairs and side tables etc in it. A good couple reading lamps and a shared ottoman and I can see it being a great place for the "drink tray" on the sideboard and nice spot to connect with your loved one over a quiet end of the day drink...or place your coffee carafe there and have a nice quiet rainy Sunday AM...while reading the paper...lots of great uses for a darker room that is super cozy. Hope this helps. c

It definitely makes sense, and getting a larger rug will make the room a bit brighter since I intend to get a light colored one.

It will be nice at holidays to sit there with the "girls" while the men are zoning out watching football. lol
