how do I make a lining for a toddler top?

I have a pattern for a sleeveless tank type top size 24 months. I made it out of a very thin cotton fabric and I wanted to have more body. It had pattern pieces for facings but I wanted to line it and thought how simple this would be to sew all in one and flip it inside out, but I could not for the life of me figure out how to flip it inside out with the armsyses and shoulders sewn together. So then I thought I would leave the shoulder seems open but I still not figure how to turn it inside out. What am I missing?

When I do something like that I sew everything leaving the side seam of the lining and main garment open on one side. Turn it right side out, reach my hand in there to pin the main fabric and part of the lining (wrong sides togther you have it all twisted around at this point). Sew that and then finish the lining by hand.
Clear as mud, I'm sure, but if you will pin it before you sew it you might see what I'm talking about.
