tension problem

I have a Singer Model #9323. I was using it tonite to sew a slipcover. It was working perfectly and then it started running rough and there was excess thread gathering loosely underneath the fabric. I believe it's caused by a tension problem, but I'm not sure. Anybody got any ideas as to what the problem might be and any solutions?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
