I've been trying to see a picture of a Singer 5235 and even the company website doesn't recognize that model number. How old is it?

Are you sure about the model number? I used to have a Singer 6235(made in the mid '80s). When the pedal/power pooped out I went to a shop that sold vacuums and sewing machines and got a universal(generic)pedal. If you still have the old pedal, I would take it to any and all shops in your area to see if a universal would fit. If you don't have the old one, see if any of the shops will let you try a universal and let you return it if it doesn't fit.
