Dining Table is REFINISHED!! so proud!

so i know there are a lot of talented, crafty folks on this board, but there are also probably some intimidated by altering the state of a piece of wood furniture. i'm an unbashed painter of wood furniture. that's never bothered me like it does some purists. :) but stripping and staining has always scared me and i finally tackled it. so this post is for my own personal pride and validation because i just LOVE how the table turned out. but also to encourage someone who may see this to try a project that's been tempting you for ages.

this table was originally my parents and the table is super quality and new(ish) but the honey oak just isn't our style, so i was obviously going for the restoration hardware aged look but without faux painting it. The chairs will be replaced entirely.

here are the befores:

and AFTER (i took the pic before cleaning up my mess. lol):

and if you care to read about the process, i have a post on my new blog i started to document the construction process for our new house. link below.

NEXT STEPS: I need to find 8-10 solid wood beautiful chairs I can refinish, and a large buffet. :)

OK--Im really envious.....2 years ago I tried to strip and stain our 30 year old pecan bedroom set. After trying numerous products it just came out so blotchy and I got so frustrated I gave up and painted it white.....with a roller. Didn't know about chalk paint then or might have tried that. Doesnt look bad from a distance, but up close...not so great. Your pics make me want to strip it and try again...maybe one of these days.

    Great job...the table looks awesome!

It is wonderful! My favorite part that made me smile was thinking of just how thrilled and excited you must have been to take the picture with the wadded up paper towels on the floor!

Wow! I love it! What brand, and color of stain did you use? I am working on an antique table and have the grime and old finish off of it. I went to Lowe's and HD yesterday for GF gel stain and finish coat just to find out that neither store carries it. I am so frustrated. I really wanted to at least stain it this weekend.

I was looking at using the GF candlelite finish but that may be too light. I really like the java stain also but IMO it will be darker than I want. Your table looks to be about the shade I was hoping for.

Your table is fantastic! I have an oak table crying out for something like this - I'm checking your blog. Thanks!

Oooooh never mind. I just read your blog. I want just stain. There is no way I have the talent to pull off paint and stain but I have an even greater appreciation for your beautiful refinished piece.

Wow, great job, and pat yourself on the back for jumping in and doing it!

You did an awesome job and should be proud!!

wow gorgeous, both the table and the redo...
I can appreciate your excitement; there is no thrill
like the thrill -- that only redoing an old piece of furniture
can bring you after restoring it to it's
original beauty...and for it to be a piece with memorabilia
attached to it -- is a super rush...

congratulations, and enjoy your 'new' table,
and welcome to the joy of knowing that they'll be more
refinishing of old furniture in your future. :)
