Easier to built from scratch or modify existing?

We're going to put a recessed medicine cabinet in our bathroom that's about to be remodeled. The space where it goes is deeper than your usual stud cavity and I want to take advantage and use a deeper cabinet to gain more storage (1920's house so storage is at a premium). I'm wondering if building a cabinet from scratch would be easier than trying to modify a purchased cabinet? I'm pretty handy with tools and construction and my FIL's main hobby is woodworking (read: he has a basement shop filled with all sorts of cool woodworking toys).

So do I build exactly what I want, or modify a cabinet that's pretty darn close?

Thanks!
