New Yankee Workshop

I am on the e-mail list for the DIY Network and have received an e-mail from them saying Norm Abram will be on their network on Saturday evenings. No comment if he is also leaving PBS or if maybe DIY is just doing reruns. Any one have any info about a possible move? Any one ever built one of his projects?

NYW has been on DIY for a couple of weeks now. They are re-runs of the show.Details are on the web, newyankee.com. Norm is still on PBS with new stuff. I've built two rocking horses from his plan, and a quantity of his adirondack chairs. Good plans in my opinion. You can order his plans from www.newyankee.com, or he has several books out, with plans included. Check your library, or used book stores. Some of his books should still be available at the major book stores.

The current (18th?) season of the New Yankee Workshop is airing on PBS right now. DIY network and others have aired reruns for years now.

I've build several of his projects, all from the early shows and they turned out just fine. The instructions and plans were complete and accurate. I used his books for the most part. Beside table, blanket chest, planters, alphabet wagon, and a bedside cabinet.

I've been involved in woodworking for 45 years as a hobby building furniture and cabinets. I am always interested in Norm's variety of expensive power equipment. I have adapted some of his techniques. My present activity is building a tall clock as a gift to my son and DIL. With a house full of antiques and my own creations, there is no interest in building any of Norm's larger projects.

NYW has been on 18 seasons??
What do they do, have 4 seasons per year?
Seriously, I didn't think it was that long ago
that the show was created. Maybe 10 years?

18 years huh? Gosh I feel old now.

    Pooh,

    We're all getting older...

Norm does 10-12 projects per "season" with one season per year. Project are numbered and started at 1xx. He's now at 19xx. I have a New Yankee book that copyrighted 1989 so it's been a while.

"This Old House" celebrated their 25th anniversary two years ago!

Just found something on Wikipedia. New Yankee first aired Jan. 1988.

If you're a fan of Norm's you will probably enjoy one Florida resident's personal obsession to the show.......including an inventory of every tool in the workshop and when it first aired........

    My favorite show was always
The WoodWright's Shop with Roy Underhill.
He didn't use any power tools at all.
Everything was done by hand using old methods and tools.
And he didn't edit out his mistakes on the show.
Just kept rolling and incorporated it into the design.

I'd love to see that show brought back. Even re-runs.

    Pooh,

I've seen Roy Underhill on local PBS stations recently. I don't know if they're new episodes or not.

The Woodwright had new shows in 06. I'm assuming the shows this year are new. I don't watch it regularly.
I've always wondered if the people living in the times he mimics had people like him building things with rocks in an effort to preserve the old ways?

I have been watching Norm for years and learned much from him. He stresses shop safety which is great. Remember David Marks (Wood Works)? He built some great stuff, but who could afford the power tools that he used... multi-router.... 16 inch sander..... rite.... I built some of his projects... just used a poor man's tools.
Remember a few years back when there were several woodworking shows on t.v. including the guy that never used power tools and the father/son combo that basically only used routers. Where did these great shows go... :(
