Painting a Kitchen Table

I'm embarking on a project to paint a maple butcher block kitchen table and base black. I'm pretty handy and have done a fair amount of woodworking and painting. I'm looking for advise on what type of paint to use. I looked in Home Depot and couldn't decide what to get. They have lots of spray paints, mostly Rustoleum brand. They also have Rustoleum oil and latex paint that they recommend for furniture. But, I'd like to make sure I get a nice smooth, hard surface.

Can anyone offer advise on the best primer and paint to use? Satin or semi-gloss? Spray or brush? Oil, lacquer, or latex? Specific brands? Type of brush? Other words of wisdom on prep and painting techniques would also be appreciated.
