Wasn't sure which forum to use for this question, so please feel free to direct me elsewhere!

I'm getting ready to reinstall the original wooden closet rods in two bedroom closets of our 1925 home. I gave them a quick sand the other day to clean them up and noticed that the wood is incredibly splinter prone. Are wooden closet rods typically bare wood or sealed in some way to avoid splinters? Not that I expect to be running my bare hand over the closet rods all of the time, but figured I'd ask before loading them up with cloths again.
