purple

The sad news is that I just finished remodeling my kitchen, I LOVE it, but I had to leave town for a 6-12 months for work. I'm going to miss that kitchen. The good news is that I'm renting a little bungalow and the landlord said to go ahead and paint away, as long as it's neutral when I leave.

I'm furnishing the house with yard sale and craigs list finds (it 's fun, never done this before) and my one treasure is a pink silk couch. The color is sorta tan/beige/coral/pink more than pink, but it's fun none the less. I want to paint the walls purple. It's an open floor plan and I may paint some of the walls a neutral color to make it easier when I move out and to add interest to the purple.

So that's it! What Purple do I paint the walls? And, what is a good compliment - gray, greige, beige?

I'm going to post some pics as soon as I remember how.

Also any input to furniture placement or what else I need to add is welcome.

Thanks!

Nancy

Be careful! You may love your rented cottage so much, you might not want to go home again. Just teasing! Seriously, though, what a wonderful opportunity to indulge yourself with a design aesthetic that differs from what you have done in your main home. Once you save some pictures into Photobucket or some other photo site, come back and link us to your public album so that we can enjoy your adventure vicariously and, of course, weigh in on your decorating questions.

pics so big.... oh well sorry.
a few purple samples on the wall behind the sewing machine, one is kalamata, i think the cardboard is autum purple, also some dark purple or purple rain.

I love your sofa!!! What a great find! I quite like the deep purple(big swatch) If you what something more muted,
I have a purple hall. I painted it 7 years ago, at the time I thought it was a grey but it is really a muted purple. It is BM tropical dusk. here is a shot of it. it abuts a soft green kitchen and dark grey living room so it works with neutrals aswell and my front vestble is hot pink ,i mean rasberry:), so I think it works with pinks too.

    Have fun with your project!!!

I painted our master bedroom BM Sleepy Hollow. It is also more muted than the colors you are playing with so I don't know if it's what you're looking for. It's a deep, dull grayed purple and I like it a lot. Looks good in both bright sunlight and evening low light. Be sure to post pictures of you space when you are finished!!

Dark Purple. Oh it is so dreamy. I went to a kitchen tour this spring and one house had a dining room in dark purple. I was going to do our bedroom in it, but decided against it for various reasons. I will be using that color down the road. It is very dark, but it is gorgeous.

I would suggest if you are not painting the entire place in that color, look at the Affinity colors, there are some dark purples in that collection and this way you can also use some other colors from the collection and you will be safe because they all work together.

    Good Luck and Have Fun!!

Wow- that's the last time i'll post photos when I'm tired. I didn't intend to post 3 of the same view!

I like both of the grayed purple violets posted, but I'm looking for something deeper. I'll only Have to live with it for a year, so I wont have time to get tired of it.

I wonder how sleepy hollow would be as the neutral on some walls and finding something more vibrant to go with it.
I have a hard time picking colors that compliment each other.
The BM dealer here can't help, they just know how to push the buttons and sell hardware. (they are very nice though)

Beekeeperswife, Thanks for the idea on the affinity colors, i'll go look at them. The BM webpage showed Kalamata paired with Soot ( a very black blue). I thought about using Soot on the small wall behind the white dinning table. Do you think it will be too much dark?

if it is too dark, you just repaint. right?

Don't forget that some of the grays look great with the Kalamata, and so does Wasabi...

Wasabi sounds wonderful with purple. Bee, I've always admired your taste in colors...bold, and always perfect.

I love kalamata. When I was torn between Kalamata and SW Plum Brown I went with Plum Brown. It is a very deep color.

amj - can you post a picture of your room with Plum Brown? Do you still like it?

I really like the Plum Brown. It is slightly less-purple than the kalamata. When I tried to take a picture in the past, I couldn't get a good shot (I think because it is in my 1/2 bath and there isn't room to get in and take the picture). I will try a few things tomorrow and will post pictures if I am successful.

I'm using SW Plum Dandy in my master bedroom ... my inspiration pic has about 4-5 diff shades of purple mixed w/a couple of shades of orange. Should be interesting!

There are two large windows in the corner, so the light changes a lot in the room. This is a beautiful color, tho.

Love the wasabi combination, but i don't want to add another color. It all started with the pink couch...

Here are a couple of pictures on SW Plum Brown. Sometimes it looks more brown, and other times it looks more purple. It all depends on how the light hits it. I really like the color. I hope it helps!

    beautiful bathroom amj!
Riley, it will be fun to see your BDR when you get it all together.

We used BM Purple Rain on our dining room and den walls (open floor plan) and it looks so deep and rich and really pops with our white trim and white and chrome fixtures. I have trouble capturing the color in a picture but it is a velvet looking dark purple and looks even better IRL than on the swatch in the BM store.
We used a pale lavender in our kitchen and it is lovely too. It is by BM but I forget the name. The # is 1384 an we had it done at 75% strength.
For our master ceiling, we had a medium purple, but it was too wishy washy, so we added some leftover Purple Rain to it and it came out smashing. It is a custom blend so I can't help with that one. I'd probably have preferred the PR after seeing it on the walls, but was afraid it might be too much of the same color in one house.
Our complementary colors are BM's Wales Green and (I forget the name of it, but) pale gray in our bedroom.

If I could only pick 3 colors for our house, it would be Purple Rain, Wales Green and the 1384 made lighter. I love how they look individually and also adjacent to each other. The Simple White trim plays so well against all of them.

Don't have a specific suggestion to you, but can never object to a room painted purple. My bedroom has been deep lavender for many years (don't remember the shade) and I've loved it. Glad you're taking advantage of this opportunity to have some fun, and can't wait to see your finished room!

Well, the purple is on the walls - 3 of the walls anyway. The remaining walls will be either gray or a warm beige/brown. I LOVE the purple. I went with Valspar paint since this is just a rental and I'm pretty happy with it. The paint went on as nice as BM although it's still a little sticky. The color is pretty much between BM Purple Rain and Autumn. I love it.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions, you all gave me the courage to go ahead with such a vibrant color.
I'll post pics when I get all the painting done.

It has been on the walls for months here and I still love it. Purple often gets overlooked in decorating and it is such a pretty color.
My older ds loved the color purple (dark, not lavender) until someone told him it was girly and now he wants nothing to do with it. It is sad because he used to really like it. We did his room in Buzz Lightyear type colors because our little guy loves green. 2 walls were dark purple and 2 were green. Now, little bro is in his own room and the big guy wants me to paint over the purple to be blue. That is a lot of work, but I will be doing it sometime soon. I did opposing walls in the same color, so the meeting up of colors is in every corner. Sigh.

I wanted a temporary color to pull the house together while we wait to do some major remodeling. I wanted to try a purple out on a whim. Why not it was just temporary? I didn't fuss and fret over the color this time and even went out to Wal Mart for the paint since I just wanted to just have some much needed color in the room. Temporary right, wrong.

I found I love it so much, that I'm trying to incorporate it throughout the house. It actually comes across almost neutral in that it fades into everything else. It's neutral, dark and changes throughout the day.

Please post pics of your purple room when you are done! I love purple and wish my bathroom sinks and toilets were white so I could paint the walls purple I am still wondering if I could paint one of the bathrooms purple with the bone skins and toilets and if it would look alright. I would want a vibrant purple or even that gorgeous purple posted by roarah. My floors are now Brazilian Cherry so purple for those walls will not look right but maybe I can get away with my favorite color in one of my bathrooms.

here is Valspar Purple Potion, I'm waiting to get my curtain fabric before I paint the rest of the room.

Are you going to repaint it to a neutral color when you move out? Purple is not a neutral color and as a landlord I would be very unhappy and would hire a painter to come in and paint it a neutral color with your deposit. Sorry most people want a neutral color if they are renting so their furnishings would not clash with the walls.

That is one serious shade of purple!!!

    Wow. Enjoy it!!

since you said the landlord said to just make sure it's neutral when you leave, here's a tip....go to Lowe's (and probably HD too) and look at the paints that are on sale, you know the mis-mixed ones. There are always a lot of neutral colors there. You can probably get paint for $2 a gallon that way.

Love the purple. So fun. And how cool to be able to have the freedom to have some fun.

    Yay!

Thanks for the tip on the cheap paint - Bee

I love the color you used!! Really dramatic! Enjoy your temporary digs!!!
