Redoing an oak dining room table (x-posted)

We have an oak dining room table that looks very sad in our newly renovated kitchen. I am planning to sand/strip the table top and try Minwax White Wash Pickling stain.
Last time, we used regular wood stain and two coats of Minwax poly. Unfortunately, the poly did not seem to hold up very well over time.

Is there a better way to finish the table? Also, has anyone here used the white wash stain - how did it come out?

Any advice/experience is appreciated.

I prefer Tung Oil rather than poly because spot repairs are easier to blend without having to do a complete refinish.

There may be nicer finishes than poly, as Randy mentioned the Tung Oil finsih, but in my experience oil based poly holds up EXTREMELY well if applied properly.

Many years ago, I did all my trim (doors, windows, base, etc) and it held up well. Have since replaced with white painted trim. Nothing gets more wear and tear than hardwood floors finished in poly and they stand the test of time.

Did you prep you table properly? Did you sand between coats? I would probably do three thin coats on a dining table.

Varnish, non poly.

Tung oil is a generic term for finishes, many have no tung oil at all in them.

Polyurethane chips and cannot be spot repaired.

Fresh finish is very important, I seldom buy finishes from a home improvement store. Sherwin Williams is my go to source.
