Depends what your goal is. If I was making it how I like then I would take down the fan and put up a modern more interesting fixture or track light or pendents. Mount tv on the wall. Get modern patterned curtains. well I can go on but .. what is your vision or style. show a pic of your style to help us.

HI -- OK first thing is please don't angle or hang things in the corners of your rooms . Move the TV to the center of that long wall then will in the wall with bookcases to make an entertainment wall . Then you could hang your light of to the side of the TV .Just one thing - that light is modern and your furniture is traditional so that hanging light might look out of place . Look up entertainment walls on HOUZZ for something to follow. For your wall color try a medium blueish grey and also paint the ceiling . Benjamin Moore -- walls -"snowball "OC- 52 OR "grey cloud" 2126 -60 -- ceiling "gray owl "OC 54 or "chalk white" 2126-70 . But check the colors with samples before you paint to see if they go with your drapes. When you re-hang your drapes after you paint , hang them as high as you can.

Why the attachment to the baby blue curtains? Ready made curtains are so inexpensive to go with your rug? I don't see the two going together right now. Take a picture looking into the room so we get the full view. So many possibilities.

If it is 4 feet wider and longer than the table top, I'd try your rug under the dining set and hang a larger version of the pendant over the table - about 36' or less above it. Agree on the tv console idea.
Your drapes are too thin and too long - shorten and line them if you can. They just need to kiss the floor. Table lamp is a bit too small with the hefty leather furniture.

As a designer.. Do you suggest putting rgs on carpet? just curious

Thanks so much! I definitely know now that I have to move the tv to the center of the wall, and shorten those curtains. I am not attached to them, but did like the shade of blue. I also know that I will be replacing the rug, once I figure out which style to go with. Right now, the rug is brown with silver and blue flowers. I do need more color in this place. Also, I am so glad that I did not go out and purchase the pendant lamp and place it over the tv!
Since I have to keep the dark brown leather furniture and dining room table (they are relatively new), I struggle with what can really go well with it. I really like the distressed/shabby chic look, but I don't think that would mix well with them at all.
Here is a pic of what you see from the entrance of the home. I found it very difficult to figure out where to place my sofa and loveseat. I do not like to see the backs of them, but didn't think I had a choice with this layout. To your right, you see the open stairway going downstairs, and the dining room. To your left, you see the back of the loveseat, and the hallway to the bedrooms. Sorry so dark!

I personally like to face the room or the window. I do see maybe people who put a couch facing the wall and you see the back of it. I find it closes off the space plus when I sat in it I couldnt see who was coming. I didnt like the feeling. If you like your view and wanto to enjoy it you may want to look outside. where is the other wall? I am confused with your options as to where to put the tv. I think you want that tv as a focal point? If you define the use of the room it will help. Just you on the couch watching tv? you and ten friends? you need a coffee table.. maybe glass. And put the couch on part of the rug bot behind it and play around with the angles. maybe angle the couch or the rug. Just move it and look. Got I moved mine alot at first. Ok so yeah I see the need for a table or floor lamp and art work and a coffee and end table maybe 2 ottomons..maybe add your personal objects. Do you have a pic of a room you like in the house?

actually as i look again ..I would take the curtains down and bring in more light..if you have privacy to do that.

I am also confused as to my options as to where to put the tv! The definition of this room is the one and only living room/family room. Most of the time the kids have the floor covered with toys, and this is the only room we watch tv in. This living room is much smaller than the one in my previous home, so I don't care for the size of the furniture (but am stuck with it). I do have two end tables, and a huge coffee table (I have added a pic of it), but it gets very crowded with it there. We are a family of four, and frequently have people over as well. I have included a couple more pics.

The first one is what the previous owner had in the room. A huge custom built entertainment center, also acting as the hallway wall (I brought my Dad along because I knew I wanted it gone!). We removed it and placed our loveseat there. I think the whole layout of this room is just awkward!

The second pic is what the previous owner had up for window treatments (you get the idea of what it looks like without the drapes).

The third is a pic with the coffee table.

I should also note that this is a ranch home built in 1950. I have been told that there was a small wall of book cases where the loveseat now sits. That is maybe why the layout is a little strange. They were possibly acting as a half wall, separating the living room from the hallway.

I would give the room more of a mid-century modern look with the color furniture you have. The colors I would use are brown, cream and the blue in your rug (since you like blue). Unfortunately, I think those curtains would have to go. I would replace them with a retro style pattern using the colors above but making sure the dominant color is cream. Look at Ikea's Henny Rand curtains--I've had a lot of luck with those in that kind of setting http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80173916/ Love the lamp you picked out but would put it over the dining table. Make sure it is the largest version of it you can get and be sure not to hang it too high. I think it would make the dining room. Also would move the rug in there. You have plenty of the dark brown color now so would concentrate on getting the rest of the room more creamy and modern. Agree the tv needs to get out of the corner and hung over a long sleek piece of furniture on the long wall. Can you move the TV console to another room or buy a matching one and put them together on the long wall?

Thanks maureenindk- I really like those curtains! The ones I have now are from Ikea, and I am pretty sure I looked at the ones you suggested. I guess I am afraid to mix patterns. That is why I chose the boring ones. Thanks again for your suggestions/ideas!

I dont have much time to respond now but from quick glance must say that if I had that view and privacy I would keep the curtains off and use all the natural light you have. Can you either buy smaller tables or make them out of the one you have now? whats your budget?
