Hi,
The mounting location of the track depends on what surface you would like to illuminate. For example in this home we are washing the ceiling and walls with track lights that are mounted on the top of the beam. If possible I try to keep the track fixture hidden from view.

If you have an area that needs task lighting, like the kitchen island, then hanging the track from the ceiling or on the bottom of the beam works best.

Yes, I am trying to light area below..couch, seating areas and still not see the tracks..thought about the front side of beam toward the fireplace, so it does not obstruct the view of the beam. I'll also use task over the bar attached to the bottom of the beam, luckily for the electrician the beams will be wrapped to "beef" them up.
