Folding screen as a headboard?

Anyone ever do that? Have you got pictures?

I realized that we need some darker wood and texture in our bedroom. I'm not happy with the set of paintings I have on the wall now, but don't want to replace that with one large picture or some metal do-dad. The thought of hanging something heavy and dangerous over our heads when we sleep makes me nervous.

Anyway, I saw a neat 3-panel folding screen/room divider that had the finish I'm looking for, a curved top, and caned panels.

Our bed doesn't sit in a frame, so we don't/can't have a headboard.

I'm just wondering if anyone has done that before, and did you have any problems?

It sounds pretty. What are your plans for mounting it? I had friends who did this with a tri-fold screen and it was lovely.

Just throwing this idea out: if you want a headboard, you don't have to attach it to the bed or the wall. I recently bought an inexpensive cover-it-yourself headboard from Target. It comes with two metal stands that are designed to connect to the headboard. But right now they are resting on the floor between the bed and wall. Sitting in bed, I can lean against it. It is well padded and quite comfortable.

I wasn't planning to mount it to anything, actually. Just stand it up against the wall, and put the head of the bed in front of it. I guess I should have taken measurements of it in the store when I saw it, but I can always return it if it doesn't work out.

We have cats, so I'm hesitant to use any kind of fabric headboard, although I've thought of that. I just imagine it being covered in cat hair and/or becoming a really cool scratching post.

I had an epiphany after reading something Magnaverde wrote. I had just redone the major pieces in our bedroom, and I just wasn't loving it, but that post made me see what was going wrong. And the current paintings turned out to be way more girly than I was planning.

I've never done it, but think it's a great idea! Look at the link below for some inspiration ideas. I'd love to see what you come up with.

I have a three-panel folding screen as my headboard. I have a metal bedframe pushed up against it. It works great! (Sorry the image is so small.)

Here's some pretty eye candy from a posting over at Apartment Therapy. Likely a bit more "pow" than you want, but interesting!

Thanks so much for the pics and ideas! So, it's not crazy? The vision in my head is that it'll add some contrast and texture to that wall, be easy to keep clean, and safer than a giant piece of glass hanging over our heads. I'm going to wait until it goes on sale again, which should be in the next week or two.

I had repainted all of our bedroom furniture either white or cream. The furniture looks so much better now, but the room just looks a little too sweet. I'm hoping that adding some darker stained wood, texture, and maybe some copper colored accessories (our bedding is pale teal) will make it look better.

Well, I went back to the store today, and it was still on sale, so I bought it. I think it looks great, and fits the head of the bed perfectly, but DH will be home any minute for the yes/no vote.

Sorry, no pics yet, because the bedroom is a huge mess, but I'll take a pic soon- if it stays.

Thanks so much for the advice!
