Another Shout Out - Backsplash Help

Hi,

I need to pick my backsplash now. I love this glass and onyx backsplash mosaic tile but think that perhaps it might be too busy with my granite. Perhaps I should put some subway tiles and a six inch border of the mosaic. Suggestions?

I would go plain with your granite as much as I love the backsplash too. I just don't see them together. Maybe as an accent line but that would be it. Your granite is the star of that kitchen.

It's hard to tell in the pics, but that tile doesnt seem to be the right color for the granite...too beige. In person, though, it may be fine. I would go with the solid color tile and then cut the mosaic in 3x3 squares and use them as accents in the backsplash. Put the background on the diagonal and put the mosaic accents as squares...or reverse with square tiles in the background with mosaic accents on the diagonal.

I gotta agree with Annie. That tile doesn't look like the right color. The mosaic would be a nice accent. But from what I can see on my screen, you need to find a new field tile.

Yeah, that mosaic is way too busy against the granite. If you must have some of it, I'd put no more than a 4" strip of it about 4"-6" above the counter top, with something else beneath and above it. Or, as Annie said, use some smaller pieces of it as accents every 14"-18" or so.

IMO, the tile color also doesn't work. Maybe something in a golden tone to coordinate with the nice granite?

    Just my two cents worth.

    Good luck!

I have to agree with the group. IMHO I would not even use it as accent tiles. Your granite should be the only star un this kitchen!
Perhaps splashes of the green in accessories on the counter and maybe window treatments.

Thanks! Back to the drawing board. It is unanimous. I don't think the pictures capture the color correctly, and it really is nice with the granite. But I do agree that it competes with the granite. I will use it as an accent, either as a small strip or as 3 x 3 accents. I agree the color of the other tile is off. Anyone have any other pictures of backsplashes they would go with? I have found very few pictures kitchens with giallo napoleon on the internet.

Hi DS945, I have New Venetian Granite as well. I picked it because I love the depth it has, but I agree the tile in the pictures are too busy. My DH and I struggled with the same backsplash problems. He wanted something more up there but i explained I wanted the granite to be the star of the show. because New Venetian is a busy granite, we should not have a busy backsplash. We picked a tile which is plain and jazzed it up a little with an onyx detail over the range. We also added a little texture with a beaded detail. I think if you go plain adding a beaded or embossed tile of the same color is just a beautiful.

that translucent grayish piece in the mosaic looks good-can you find a subway in something like that.....the counter has smokey undertones that play off that.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. LRy511, your kitchen looks so much like mine. Your backsplash is lovely and gives me an idea of what mine would look like. I would never tire of yours! I have an beige tile floor and my island is brown as well. Your pictures are so helpful. Time to play a bit more. Plus, I have to find some pictures of tile options I found a while back.

We were faced with the same issue and here's what happened. I loved a mosaic and I thought it really went with my rain forest green counters. First we thought we would use it on one wall and plain glass subways on the others. We tried it without gluing it up and realized it was a big fight with the counters. Then we put a 3 row strip with the subways and glued but not grouted. 15 minutes later I knew it was just too much. The counter is the star and you can't have 2. DH thought it was ok and was reluctant to take it down. I came here to GW and got the support I needed to do what I knew was right for me. No regrets. I still love the mosaic but there are lots of design and kitchen things I love that just don't work.
BTW- I love your granite and your kitchen.
