Length and placement matter. =)

So, now that I have the kitchen cabs and drawers figured out (Yay! Thanks for the help!) I'm thinking about the hardware. The island in this pic is close to what my kitchen will look like with Alaska White granite and espresso shaker style cabs.

I like the look they have with the pulls.

So, the pulls go on the stiles of the cabs and the rails of the drawers?

On the cabs they pretty much have to go on the stiles. Right? I know some people put them horizontally on the rails of the cabs but I'm sure I'd pull down on them, rather than out, and pull them out that way! And I feel like I'll need them to run vertically to break up the brown a bit.

If they go on the stiles on the cabs should they go on the rails on the drawers (bottom 2 drawers in my kitchen)? I noticed in the Hardware Placement thread that most pics on that had them in the middle of the drawer. So I'm confused. I'm going for a contemporary look - does that change the placement?

What about the slab drawers (top drawers in my kitchen) - then they just go in the middle of the drawer? (Like on the bank of drawers on the right in this pic?) But if that goes in the middle and the next drawer it goes in the top rail are those going to be too close to each other? (Top drawer is 6" deep I think.)

And, what about size/length? I will have 1 bank of 12" drawers (essentially a useless waste of space but all there is room for next to my recycle bin!), 2 banks of 21", 1 of 24", and 3 of 39" drawers. I want one long pull rather than 2 5-6" pulls on the drawers - even the 39". Cabs are mostly 36" except above range and fridge. So should I follow the rule of 1/3rds (that I read someone used as a rule of thumb - was that breezygirl?), i.e., pull should be about 1/3 of length of drawer/height of the cab? Again, the look in this pic is essentially what I'm going for.

Thanks in advance for your help! (And pics if possible. :)

The cabinets where you see the pulls on the doors going horizontally are usually pull outs (say for instance, garbage) where the door and the insert come out as one unit and the doors aren't hinged on the side...it allows you to pull evenly to open it. With the picture you posted, I would bet that the cabinet you see on the far left as you face the island is either garbage, or has an inset that is attached to the front of the door. The center doors where the sink is are hinged and they open left & right.

Slab drawers typically have pulls centered.

5-piece drawers can have the pulls either on the rails or in the center. Personally, I like them centered more, which is what you see in the picture you posted.

Oh, and I don't think your 12" drawer is necessarily a waste of space - you'll find something to use it for. But, have you considered if it would be more usable as a tall cabinet to put a pull-out organizer into for spices, or lids for pots, or cookie sheets?

I think there's a good bit of room for what you choose in regard to sizes. 1/3 does look nice usually. But, if you have a long drawer, you can use one long pull or two shorter ones.

I have slab top drawers and 5-piece for drawers over 8 inches, just like the Shakers did. I put the pulls on the rails. If I had centered them, the bottom pull would be annoyingly low, and I knew I'd avoid the bottom drawers like the plague. I do enough stooping in the garden.

Thanks andrea and may. You always provide me with good things to think about. The stooping would annoy me, gotta admit.

beeps - Size and placement don't matter as much as you think. They're generally considered a matter of personal taste. :-) I have two small pulls on my wide drawers, others like one big one. Mine are centered, but I have raised panel drawers with no top rail on the drawers.

Something related to your earlier post occurred to me tonight as I put away my 12 QT pot. When you ask for drawers, what size will they be? I measured my tallest pot to see how big the biggest drawer had to be. My drawers are(from the top) 5", 8" and 11". I couldn't remember if anyone had mentioned the sizes of the drawers before. It's part of thinking about what will go in each one.

lol Ginny20! I think my top drawer is 6" deep and, umm..., I have no idea about the other 2! Deeper than 6". :) I know they are 3-drawer stacks, but sometimes I'm just not a detail person! =) (Although the builder and designer would def not agree with that.) I don't own a 12 qt pot, but would imagine it might have to go in my pantry if I did, and it is huge. I don't think my designer knew how deep they were. She isn't really a KD, she is actually most into tile, but got roped into doing everything for these houses. So, she's a little out of her comfort zone sometimes. These aren't custom cabs so I just have to take whatever the standard is. I could have gone 4-drawer but after reading about those I went 3. Thanks for thinking of me! :)

Hi Beeps. Yes, it was me spouting off about the Golden Mean (rule of thirds). :) I used a polished nickel pull that came in multiple sizes so my pulls would be proportionate to drawer size. It's all personal preference. I don't like two smaller pulls on a wide drawer. Its too busy for me. YMMV.

I'm sure you've seen my cabs before, but this shot illustrates my pull placement. The pulls centered on the panel on the bottom drawers really aren't too bad. Harder than the top drawers, definetly. The pulls on my few upper cabs are placed horizontally on the bottom rails.

Beeps: I'm in the camp that likes the cabinet hardware on the styles and rails of shaker doors and drawers. I used both slab and 5 piece drawers. On my slab drawers I put the pulls were the rail would have been so that the placement is consistent. I too have showed this picture multiple times but here it is once again to illustrate for you.
