Help on backsplash choice

I really love glass tile. I found this mosaic which compliements the cabinets and natural red oak floors.

We only have 1 wall to tile which is about 12' long.

We have an OTR micro so no detail behind the range.

The sink cabinet is taller but only by a few inches, so we would add some more accents there.

I am thinking about using the 3x3 as accent tiles and the mosaic as the predominant tile across the board.

Is this too much for my granite (asterix/astrix)?

Thank you in advance!

IMO, I think it is too busy for the granite. I really LOVE your granite (and in general I don't like busy granites) and I think the tri-colored mosaics plus the bigger accent pieces would take the attention away from the countertops. I would go with either the darkest color or the medium color and do a solid backsplash and not have any of the 3x3 accent pieces.

    hi stacys..

I have to agree with chocolate...Your cabinets and granite are beautiful together. I just think there would be too much going on. However, I would not want to go too dark on the backsplash, because your granite is so dark and rich. I would try and pull a light color from it and use that. Best of Luck!

I agree with the previous posters. You have such a nice granite combination! Pull a light to medium tone color but consider going subway instead of 3x3. I think the uniformity of the 3x3's grout lines would clash with your busy countertops. I suggest going 3x6 or larger in subway instead. It makes your horizontal grout lines the more dominant ones. Since it is in the same plane as your countertop it gives a much softer look to the backsplash and complements an active countertop better.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

How about this angle-what if I want to downplay my granite? Would the mosaic help? I would like to make the counters look darker, blacker. It is a little more gray than I wanted, funny how granite looks a lot different on your counters with lighting than it does when shopping for it. . .

I would prefer not to use the accent tile but my DH thinks something should break up the pattern. Ideas?

Open for suggestions and appreciate the advice!

sorry, but I agree with everyone else.....a solid would look better with your granite. Which is VERY nice, by the way....why would you want to down play it?? And actually, I don't think the mosaic would downplay it anyways, it would just look busy.

thanks everyone! i must say it's hard to find solid tile, at least in the local big box shops. all I could find was bright white subway.

where does one buy tile locally? and in stock? I was hoping to do the backsplash this week!

    I guess I will keep looking . . .

and thanks for the granite comments. sometimes i just second guess my choice after it's too late, so appreicate the positive feedback!

My Lowes and HD sell solid subway and mosaic tiles in colors other than white, but I live in a pretty big suburb. Might be harder to find in more rural areas. I also have "The Tile Shop" near me and they have a lot more selection, but also have higher prices.

What about glass subway tile? It is pretty pricey ($20/sq ft by me) but since you don't have that much to cover and not a lot of cuts it would look very nice.

You can also do the 3x3's that you have if you really like them but do a brick pattern instead. If you want to play down your countertops then have a busier backsplash.

I am looking at different bs ideas (have to pick countertops first) so I am looking forward to see what you decide.

If you have your heart set on glass, look for something more neutral maybe 2 tone and a different pattern like longer thiner oblong squares. Another idea would be to throw the mosaic glass in as an accent, maybe a boarder or pendant. If you love the glass - keep at it until you find the right combination for the countertop!!! The granite is gorgeous!!!

I agree with most that the granite should be the star. The mosaic will compete with the granite. Look at the Finished kitchen Blog. There are many kitchen that use these tiles as borders. Can you do that with a simple cream color tile?

Busy granite = simple backsplash. Ours is busy so we used a neutral subway with the shimmer of a 1" glass liner one tile up from the counter. Looks great - classic - and the granite is still the attention getter.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Since my 1st selection is not a winner, here was my 2nd choice. Travetine with matching mosaic. Still thinking about the layout and where the border can go, but let me know if these colors are less busy and would compliment the granite without overpowering it.

Thanks again, your comments are so helpful! and so unbiased-family keeps telling me what I want to hear. I need the truth!

Looking at this again, my vote now is to skip the mosaic tiles. You seem to want decoration, so look for some small incerts. i am not a fan of travertine. I don't think you need the variation. A simple ceramic tile in a cream color would be classic. There are some kitchens in the Finished Kitchen Blog that use borders. You can get some good ideas there.
