Counter Depth Refrigerator

I would like input on counter depth refrigerators. Now that we are moving things back into our kitchen our full depth refrigerator just doesn't look right, so now we are looking for a counter depth refrigerator to replace it. Could you all chime in with what you like/dislike and what model you have? I currently have a side by side with in door ice/water dispenser. I'm undecided about whether I want the dispenser in the door and am also open to a french door.

I will post this in the appliance forum also but just wanted to get input here for those of you have recently finished or are working on your kitchen.

I have a kitchenaid french door counter depth fridge. The water dispenser is inside the door. The size of it has been fine. We are a family of 4, and do have another fridge in the basement and a wine fridge in the kitchen. If I didn't have the back up fridge in the basement I would say no to the counter depth. This set up has worked well for us so far.
I love the idea of the french door, but have to say that our kitchenaid model doesn't have the tightest seal. Even the kids are trained to make sure the door is shut. I have come home a couple times where it was left open just a bit for the whole day :(
Good luck, I love the way the counter depth looks!

Our counter depth is only a few weeks old but so far we love it. The esthetics is soooo much better than our old standard model and the room it gives was key for us. I thought I would hate the fact that the water is on the inside but we actually kinda like it! The sleek look of the french door is great so I don't miss the water/ice on the outside.

I will say we are still getting used to the space. We are a family of 5 and if it wasn't for the fridge in the garage and the feezer in the basement we wouldn't be able to do it. It does make you conscious of the amount of food you have on hand and not over buying. I like that you can see all of your food- nothing is stuffed back like in my old side by side.

Btw, we have the Viking french door model. It was a floor model and we got it for a steal. I would however try to get a model that has the most cubic feet the next time we purchase.

We have the same Kitchenaid model as Positano does. Ours is 72" in height (vs. 68"). We haven't had any issues with the door seal. We also have a side by side fridge in the garage. We love our fridge...keeps things cold/frozen as they should be. Have had no issues of not having enough space.

I don't have personal experience, but my sister just finished her kitchen and put an LG counter depth in. Her's is a family of 4 and she did notice a lack of space, but as others have done, she keeps a second frige. I looked at counter depth for my kitchen, but it just didn't have the room I need for a my family of 4 without keeping a second frige around, which I didn't want to do.

We also have the KA counter depth french door with the water dispenser inside. It is our only refrigerator, and has been fine for just the 2 of us. In fact, I like the set up a lot better than our old larger side by side where I would often "lose" things in the back. No problems with the seal, but if I don't always get it closed due to carelessness on my part, the door alarm (which I originally thought was dumb) lets me know.

I also have a KA counter depth french door, water dispenser inside. I had one outside, but was having a lot of issues with the ice maker, so they finally exchanged it. No problems thus far with this one. The seal is fine on mine - no problems with the door closing at all.

I love having the fridge line up with the cabinets on either side. I have a large pantry to the left of it, so it really feels built in. We're only two people in our home so I find the storage adequate. I was surprised that the freezer held more than it appeared it would but again - we're only two.

I was given a small regular refrigerator during the exchange since the in-door water is more money - that went into the basement. It's come in handy for extra storage when we have company and for stocking up on extra drinks to have on hand. I always have had an extra fridge anyway - regardless of what type of fridge I owned, because there always seems to be times when you need the additional space.

We have the same fridge as fivefootzero. Love that it's taller but doesn't seem obtrusive. No problems so far (we've been using it for only a few weeks). We plan on putting an extra fridge in the basement, which will help for parties, holidays, etc. But for everyday use, this fridge works (and looks great!)

Same KA CD French door fridge as all the pp! :) honestly, I really hated it when we first got it because it really seemed much smaller than our previous normal depth fridge. I think we just keep A LOT of beverages in our fridge, it took me a while to get the hang of creatively filling it. The freezer was too small, too. But, we purchased a freezer for the garage, and I am planning to get a fridge drawer installed in either my island or my butler's pantry for beverages.
Bottom-line, however, even with all the space issues, I would never trade it for a full depth because of the aesthetics. (Yes, I am one of those flighty, "form over function" folks! ;)

After 12 years with a smaller sized side by side, we are moving to a french door. Will not use a counter depth model, something about less space for more money..... Plus, I don't want to keep a second unit running, especially my 12 year old side by side. We are moving the fridge to a short wall, replacing where the laundry once was. The contractor will build out dead wall space 3 to 4 inches, to "absorb" the full depth refrigerator. That plus the pantry cabinet and the finished bead board side will be fine. Kit is 13 X 20, the refrigerator in left end of the 13 foot wall.

We love our counterdepth Kitchenaid. Can't really say anything negative about it. Like other posters, we do have a basement fridge we use to store large items when entertaining though. We also have a wine fridge.

We have had ours for almost 4 years now. When our old side-by-side KA died, I had been looking at the stainless KA and the Jenn Air. Wouldn't you know it, the KA counter-depth would take a week to get and they had the Jenn Air in stock? Well, I should have waited for the KA. I like the JA ok but I liked my old KA better for several reasons. One is that I miss my crushed ice. I know that sounds silly, but I'm a big water drinker (no soft drinks) and a must-have was the ice and water dispenser. At the time of purchase, there weren't a lot of choices out there. I didn't realize that the JA didn't dispense crushed ice. Oh well, I got my refrigerator the next day but I wish I had just lived out of a cooler and the beer fridge in the storage room for a week and waited for the KA.

It's just DH and I and the counter-depth is fine...as long as you have another fridge and freezer to handle the over-load. If it's your only one you might be in trouble. But the convenience of layout is wonderful.

I have the same CD fridge as everyone else, but mine is JennAir (same maker as KitchenAid). I have loved it from day one. Did have a seal issue on the freezer, but hubby fixed it (I think it got out of level or something). Sometimes I don't push the door hard enough to close all the way. That's when the alarm goes off letting me know to close the fridge! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

I also have the tall KA but with the pro handles. I love it. Compared to our previous full depth side by side, it's organized like a dream. We do have extra fridge drawers for drinks and snacks but I'm pretty sure it would all fit if it had to. I love love love having the water inside the door rather than on the outside. I hated wiping the drips off the front of the fridge all the time.

I like the organization of the freezer. The sliding drawers and locking/unlocking ice bin are very handy. I feel like you get to use every bit of the space effectively. My relatives who have an LG have commented on how nicely organized our freezer compartments are compared to theirs. Having said that, there is not enough freezer space. But there wasn't in our previous side-by-side either. I couldn't function without a garage freezer.

And no one has commented on the ice cubes. They're still crescent shaped but they're smaller than other crescent cubes I've had from other refrigerator ice makers. So I like the ice better.

Love our Elux CD fridge with perfect temp drawer and LED lights - I have saved so much $$ in less wasted food.

Ours is a Samsung CD/FD with ice & water through the door.
We've had no trouble with doors not closing or the through the door dispenser.
It keeps food infinetly longer than our old fridge which now lives in the garage and is used primarily for parties and to keep soft drinks chilled.

Our appliances came in a couple weeks ago. We bought the "Super capacity" CD from LG. It is a beautiful french door fridge with water and ice in the door that does not take up any shelf space inside. The LED lights just sparkle! We have yet to move in so as far as Keeping food... Not sure. But it does keep our water and beer chilled! This new fridge is bigger than the one I currently have (old full depth skinny LG). We will have an under counter bar fridge downstairs with most beverages stored in there.

Thank you everyone for such wonderful viewpoints and information. I think I am going to order the KA CD french door tomorrow. Unfortunately my space is a little too short for the 71" so I will have to go with the shorter one. I also decided to get the internal water/icemaker. I liked the Electrolux too but wanted the option for a water dispenser. I wonder why they don't offer that.
I do have a side by side refrigerator as well as a separate freezer in my garage so it should work ok. I was just hoping for more space (as is true with everything in the kitchen!)
    Again, many thanks to all!

I just wanted to add that I have the same Samsung as willtv. I love it now, but it took me a couple weeks to get used to the shallow depth. I'm not exactly sure what changed, but I'm very happy now. I LOVE the freezer space and the door ice/water dispenser. It makes it so easy to tell my kids to get themselves a glass of water instead of a juice box :-)

I do have a wine fridge and full side by side fridge in the basement, as well as a mini fridge in the garage for water bottles and juice. I think without the full fridge in the basement for beverages and meat, I might not be as satisfied with the counter depth.
