Help! Please suggest a countertop!

Ok... this belongs in bathrooms but there is so much more traffic here, and I really need to make a decision quickly, so I'm coming to you for help.

I'm wide open to suggestions for a guest bathroom vanity countertop. Master will have carrara but that doesn't feel quite right for this bathroom. I'm open to a marble but something that has tan/beige tones (but *not* gold) as well as gray maybe? I don't know my marbles well. Or, do you think carrara is fine? Then it will have same top as master. Someone has suggested Crema Marfil.

Floor is the plain gray (on the left), shower will have the "silk" (bottom right) field tile running vertically alternating with the glass tile also running vertically. The glass will be the same maker/color, but I will be using the linear not the mosaic. There is a shower/tub combo in this bath - not a separate shower and tub. Cabs will be expresso.

Help? What would you suggest for a countertop?

If it were my bathroom, I'd have a RED countertop:-) But what do you want it to read? Relaxing, Modern, Zen? And is the backsplash for the sink area going to be that mosaic or more plain? I'm also thinking of the cool piece that someone over in bathrooms has where it looks like river rocks were sliced for her son's bathroom.

lol bahacca. You would have a RED one, wouldn't you? :) I said I was wide open to suggestions. Wow - I left myself open for that one, didn't I? =) I'm not that gutsy.

The river rocks one is awesome! Someone has a kitchen out of that too and I love it. It is fab.

I'm def on the contemporary end of things.

I could go either way with the backsplash - glass tile or same material as countertop. It depends upon what I get for a countertop. I do have difficulty mixing and matching so unless the countertop is essentially plain I will probably go with bs of the same material as the countertop. If very plain, will probably go glass bs.

You can do a black surface-A Volga Blue would be really stunning I think. Not marble, but is dark with greys and really gorgeous spaces of reflective royal blue. I saw emerald pearl that is similar to volga blue(Volga is more chunky)that is blacker than green at my yard.
And funny you have the silk tile. I have that as an idea for whenever we get to our master bedroom.
I think I saw a remnant of the river rock stuff at Stone Age on Saturday if you really are interested.

My son's bathroom has taupey gray tones and similar linear patterns and a transitional feel. We used a quartz remnant from our stone yard becaue I didn't want anything speckled and didn't want a lot of movement. I don't know the exact color. I really need to find the updated pics but you get the idea:

But I think quartz will give you a nice sleek look. And you don't have to keep it all gray. You can do deeper or lighter. I like the choices you have so far!

Taj Mahal Quartzite might look nice.

With all the gray tones and the espresso cabinets, I think it might look nice to have a white quartz counter for contrast. You could use the glass tile (either linear or mosaic) as the BS with the white counter to tie it in with the shower area.

Who makes those glass tiles? I really like the mosaic.

That would look good if it didn't have too much tan/beige in it. What about Super White or Kashmir White or one of the gray/whites without much movement?

I meant to post earlier that I wanted to use that Silk tile in DS's bathroom but it was just more than I wanted to spend for a child's bathroom. It's neat looking tile!

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. Sounds like you think I need some contrast. You are right I'm sure. I should also add there is no natural light in this bathroom so the idea of going lighter or white is probably a good one.

kaysd - The mosaic tile is Glass Mosaic Blends by Voguebay. I saw it at Daltile. I've been drawn to a lot of glass by Voguebay - I don't know what it is, crispness, or clarity, or something, but I like a lot of it. I like the mosaic too, but I thought it was too busy with the Silk so am doing the linear. There are several other color options also. Voguebay's website (voguebay.com) is one where you have to sign up so I haven't really used it because I didn't sign up. You can see the colors here but they just show the 1x1 and linear, not the mosaic (which I think is called Magic) .. http://www.ceramictileworksmn.com/Mirage__Blends

Babs I don't even know how much the Silk is. It's a new build so everything is rolled in together and I get one number for all the tile work. Individual items hurt less that way! =) Your son's bathroom looks great!

I'm wondering about the Super White for the master where I'm currently torn between Carrara and Cambria Whitney. But that's another thread... =)

Thanks for the ideas. Keep them coming. White with the tile for a backsplash sounds like it could be pretty sharp.

Maybe a greyish corian would look nice with that. Might want to consider getting the integrated white corian sink too if that is in your budget.

Someone else brought up GLASS counters earlier today on another thread. Glass would look quite striking without being red;-)

Oh deedles - the have some pretty things on that website!! Makes me question the whole glass accent thing. :) I may have to think about those for the shower pan area in the master rather than tile. I can't imagine that it would work as a countertop even though they show it that way and some of the stones are flat. It would just seem like it would never be really flat and level.

Glass would be pretty b! And I looked at the corian too jgopp. It has come a long way since my parents used it in their kitchen 20 years ago!

Wow. So many options I'm about to punt and just go with the builder grade cultured marble vanity and change it out once I move in.

I have a guest bathroom where we did porcelain tile very very similar to the tile Babs711 posted, except it was 6 x24. Our vanity was not espresso but a much lighter weathered wood. We used imperial danby marble (white with soft white/ beige/gold and grey tones) on the vanity. I cannot get into the house until thursday to get a picture (staining floors), but if you can wait to see a pic on thursday I will take one and post it. I was worried about what type of counter to use with the tile that has so much movement, but it worked so nicely and it has a nice elegant classic feel to a room that could have looked a little modern.

I have the river rock kitchen (black and gold marinace if you want to get technical) and it would work with your grays. Here is a pic of my countertop.

Funny thing kamkar - I was looking at the Danby last night. Thought if I went with marble it was better than Carrara because it had the beige tones. I don't want anything too gold, however. And since this is a small vanity I will not be picking a whole slab I'm sure, just some remnant will be used would be my guess. I would love a pic when you get the opportunity! Thanks.

Thanks for the pic Gone South and providing the name - I couldn't remember it. I may get that priced out. I do love it... but I have trouble seeing it with the shower tile. Would it really work? I'm no good at the mixing matching thing - I get very conservative. And, this will be in the AZ desert (what am I thinking?!) so will river rock look out of place? But, they actually do use it in landscaping so maybe not. I could see that with the master selections which have only a linear pattern, not the cross-hatched pattern like the guest, more easily. All my life it's been don't mix stipes and plaid and circles and... =) Hard to break that habit!

Thanks again gang. I'm giving myself until next Monday. At that time I must either decide or go with builder's grade cultured marble and do something else later.

I think linear patterns and quiet colors are a good counterpoint to the dramatic circles of the granite's pebbles/rocks. Since you are going with remnants, I think the easiest thing to do would be to take your tile samples with you to the fabricator's and see what remnants they have on hand that work.
