What do you plan to do with these rocks?

I plan to use black rocks between concrete pads which are in long rectangular strips. The question is whether to use 1/2-1" OR 1-2" rocks in these areas (which are about 5: wide but up to 14 feet long) knowing that I like the look of larger rocks, but also knowing that people will be stepping on these as they traverse the patio region.

Yes, I think the smaller ones would be easier to walk on

Assuming the gaps you are filling are fairly small, you will find that people naturally step over them. If you prefer the larger stones, go that way.
