Another project DONE! Pics...

Ok, so I feel a little bit scatter-brained in how I'm approaching all my decorating, running from project to project, room to room, but I am slowly getting things done. So, here is my latest project done (Ignore the strings for now). I actually got the idea from one of my other threads that I posted when magnaverde mocked up the big E on my stairwell when I was considering buying a wooden E as an art piece. I'm pretty proud of this little project; so, if you think it's awful, please don't comment! I put together the entire canvas from 2x2s, stretched it myself (it's 4'x7.5'), drew and painted the letters and just hung it last night with my DH. I love the painting for several reasons. First, our last name starts with an "E" so the eye chart idea was perfect bc that's often the biggest letter at the top. Second, my FIL is a retired opthomologist, and he's been somebody whom I've roped into so many "projects" over the last few years (so has kind of been my partner) and also a great guy (so a little bit of an homage to him). Also, the letters represent each of the members of our family, and I like that. Finally, bc the art piece is hung so high (on a 22 ft. wall), it's kind of funny that it's an eye chart and tests whether you can see it. Anyway, it was more of a feat to hang it than to make it. Note the strings (which we are going to cut off tonight). We came up with an elaborate manual lift and pulley system that took over 2 hours to figure out! Anyway, thank you Paintergirl for your advice re the glaze. It was super helpful.

Very unique in a good way. I love it!

I love it!!!! It is very cool, even when you don't know the story behind it. And when you know the story--even better. I much prefer wall art that has some type of meaning.

I have been having a hard time trying to figure out wall art for our rennovations. I am going to make a large canvas with our last name with the letters made out of things I photograph that have meaning. For example, the "o" will be the tire on my husbands car that he saved for, dreamed about, and absolutely loves. It's kind of trendy right now, but it will be special to me as the letters with all have meaning.

Your canvas just gave me the idea to do something with the number "21" which is my lucky number--my husband, my parent's, and my kids bday; my wedding date, and my address.

Thanks for all the kind words! I am struggling with decorating so many blank walls, and I love how this turned out. The entire project only cost me about $40, and it is exactly what I wanted.

Kristine, great ideas about the letters (I've always loved that kind of art) and the number. Sounds perfect. Please post photos when you are done!

How great is that? I love it.

Now that is art! Love it when something personal occupies a family space! Very fun idea...and one I might be stealing, um, I mean borrowing, lol!

Just perfect! Cute, a bit funky, totally personal - great job!

That looks really cool. Nice job.

Wow, that turned out great. It really makes me think twice about running all over town (or cruising to the ends of the internet) to find art.

    That is so cool!

Love the story that goes with it. I think it is unique and fun.

This is just super! Love it.

That looks awesome! Happy to help and can't wait to see your next project!

Love it! I remember your original post when you mentioned the idea. Came out fantastic.

Could you post a "long distance" picture? To see the overall area?

    Gobrono,

that looks awesome. Can you now come decorate my house? I am seriously impressed with your level of energy. I have a U shaped stairway and a large wall that needs something. I really wanted to put a set of vintage nyc subway signs (I'm from ny), DH feels it will be too trendy. The canvas nyc signs cost about $250 each- so nice job with the DIY

What a neat idea! Clever, clever!!!!

    WOW WOW WOW!!!!

That turned out EXACTLY like I saw it in my head!!! I can't wait to see a shot of it from the same perspective that you showed us before. And you did a FANTASTIC job of doing the lettering and painting! WOW! Great job!!

    Excellent work!

Everyone stole my adjectives above, but I really think it is fantastic ;)
I'd rather have something like that than something mass produced with no meaning any day.

Thank you again so much for the kind words. It's good to have this forum bc most people I know just aren't into this stuff. So, I feel like I'm doing this in a vacuum and I can't decide if it's any good or not. I do love doing this stuff. I do actually have a pretty demanding full time job and 4 little boys. I have taken to doing all this stuff in the middle of the night. It's been a rough couple of months, in terms of sleep!

pps7, I love the idea of the NYC subway signs. I lived in NYC for a bit, and another image I love is the map of the NYC subway. I've seen shower curtains with the image, and I always thought it would be great blown up. I don't think the subway signs would be too hard though. Some circles with letters in basically, right? Go for it!

    I LOVE that!

looks wonderful! is there another thread where you talked about your process, the type of paint - anything in particular that you did to get such a nice result?

Mary Lu, here is the best "long distance" picture of the wall. I'm working on the rest of the room and house. I'm getting several little projects done, hopefully before the holidays. I'll be posting more as I get them done.

Kiki, nope, there isn't another post where I discuss the process. I just used very basic acrylic paint that I bought at Michaels. I drew the letters using a ruler (after much calculation), and then I used a glaze mixed with some of the acrylic (thanks to Paintergirl) to give it an aged look. I've been always wanting to do more painting, and this has gotten me inspired to try some other things (since I have a bunch of left over supplies).

    Hi Gobruno.

Congratulations, not only on the execution of this piece, but on figuring out the logistics of getting it up & in place. It's one thing to come up with a good idea--that's the easy part--and it's another thing entirely to run with it & turn it into a reality. I'm sorry to admit I have a whole drawer full of sketches & renderings of projects I designed for my former places that I somehow never got around to actually doing. Somehow, paying clients always seem to slow down progress at home. At any rate, you did a great job. Thanks for coming back to show off your finished project.

    Regards,
    Magnaverde.

I LOVE IT!!!!! That is one of the best ideas I have seen in awhile.

gobruno - that turned out so cool! You are really pumping out the projects. What's next?

Such a unique idea and you did such a good job! Where did you find the loose canvas to stretch?

I'd love to do something like this to represent my DH's occupation - a banker. Any ideas for me?

Thanks magnaverde for providing the inspiration! Jo Ann, yes, I am going fast and furious on the projects lately. We are having Christmas for DH's entire family at our house (27 people!); so, I am really trying to check the projects off my list. Although, it's making me grumpy bc I'm getting no sleep! ;) I'll post some more photos in the next week or so, when we've gotten the house to where we want it, although there is still much more to be done.

newhomebuilder, I bought the canvas at Michael's. They sell it in rolls pre-gessoed, and I had a 40% off coupon that I used. So, it wasn't that expensive. Plus, I have lots left over, which means that I should probably figure out another project. You just be some wood and nail it together in the shape you want, and stretch and staple the canvas in place. I used 2x2s bc my piece was rather large. If you are doing a smaller piece, you could use thinner pieces of wood. So, a banker.... what kind of banker? How about a large graphic bull?
