Recently, maddielee started a thread on this topic asking about the Simply Spray brand and emagineer chimed in with a rec for automotive upholstery spray paint (thank you both!).

So I took that ball and ran with it...

Now, this is my test chair (and I happened to have 2 that were identical), I haven't yet done the one(s) I intend to do, but I thought I'd give y'all a sneak peak and some of my experiences:

I used Dupli-color brand bought at O'Reilly's, in Flat Black. Loved everything about it, but I did have an issue... this chair has a more carpeted-wooly feel than the one(s) I'm planning to do soon, and it soaked up the paint and took almost 1.5 cans to do this, and I don't consider it finished - in the right light you can still see the mauve color of the original fabric. In addition, the finish is rougher than the original, if feels slightly rough instead of, well, wooly-soft (though I do think that will change with time and wear).

The chairs I will ultimately do have a flatter weave of fabric and I think will take the paint better, but here's what I'll do differently anyway: I'll wear a glove and work the paint into the fabric for two reasons: the paint should go farther and the finish won't feel like paint.
