18'' deep upper cabinets anyone?

Wondering if anyone has gone with 18" deep upper cabinets and how they like them? Do they limit visability to the counter below?? What spacing between the counter and the cabinets do you have?

I am only going to have 45" or 60" of upper cabinetry since Im removing a wall and wanted to maximize that space

Thanks in advance

If you need persuasion beyond live wire oak's structural arguments, there are aesthetic arguments against it. I considered it too.

It was explained to me that unless you have very deep lower cabinets, that deep uppers are really, literally, "in your face" and it feels kind of suffocating while you're standing at the counter.

Try a cardboard, maybe a packing box mockup, and see how it feels.

You might try 14" deep uppers - you get 16% more space than a 12" cabinet.

Actually 15" uppers are an easy change (cabs typically go up by 3" increments without too much cost...2" costs alot!). The 15's flow well in our kitchen, but any deeper, I'd agree, it would be an astetic issue as well as the general issues of stregnth and mounting that Live brings up.

Agree about not having 24" deep for all the reasons above. Visually, your base cabinets need to support your upper cabinets or things could end up feeling very unstable. Thus your base cabinets need to be substantially larger than your uppers. 24" is too deep.

You could have a 24" deep column of cabinets, like a pantry with cabinet above it.

well im doing custom so the structural should be an issue, but ya i guess asthetics would be an issue as well. Ill prob gowith 14 or 15" then, thanks for the help all

Just for a visual, this is a 15" top over a 24 3/4 deep counter (24" lower cabs with an overhang):

You might consider pulling out the uppers to 15 and the lowers to 28 or 30 on that wall. I'm thinking of doing this and also building in drawers so that the uppers come right down to the lowers but I would still have a decent amount of counter in front of them. That way the structure is solid from floor to ceiling.

We have a 15" deep dish cabinet above the dishwasher and 14" deep cabinets on the cooktop wall. I love them and they really expand the storage space a lot. I can't imagine using shallower cabinets like we had before. The ones over the cooktop line up flush with the Advantium and feel like a natural fit and is very comfortable to work in front of it. The one over the dishwasher holds a ton of dishes. 18" would be too big, but 15" is just about right. Here's some photos:
